I think it is a travesty that someone with these FC stats is not anywhere red-ball selection

selectors still prefers test batters from top 4-5 domestic teams.

Or ones perceived to be in the top 4-5 domestic teams, thanks to history

Jaiswal (Mum)

Rahul (Kntk)

Sai (TN)

Gill (Pun)

Karun (Kntk/Vid)

Pant (Delhi)

Jadeja (Sau)

Washi (TN)

Of those, only Vid and maybe Mum have been at the top in the last 5-6 yrs. I think there is also an element of intuitive rather than systematic data-based selection strategy. Like Sai - picked based on potential and eye-test. Will it work out? Only time will tell.

How test selections for batters works in most of teams (including Aus.)

;selectors wants to pick a batter early if they are doing good. So to give 2-3 years of development time along side senior batter. Learn how to score in test, tempo and construct an innings , learn the art of batting. This is because of diff. condition (hot/cold/windly ect), pitch conditions, and different team.

For Odis and t20i, wkts all over are same good for batting generally

Figuring out test batting takes time. So to give early start, players are picked early. So in Ind the problem is apart from major centres there is no media presence so 2 players of same age at level of game and skill are treated differently. For some1 from big centre you will start hearing the names but for other from smaller centre you wont even know. So a player frm major centre is picked early for Ind side.

And then the other player will have to work hard and as usual will have couple of bat season and be forgotten till they resurge with some good performance but by then they are 27-28 ?? As a selector would you like make a call give this guys 2 years to work -out batting at intnl level if they do not do good in 1st few games.

This was karun's situation even though he is from a big centre and as Agarkar rightly said they can not give another series or two to him

Or IPL exposure of the right kind. Sai emerged not from TN cricket but from IPL. But being in the top-order gave him some advantages that a "finisher" does not get.

Oh ... Didn't realize that. I thought UP is usually in the elite league. That changes things.

There are only 6 teams in plate group

gone are the days when only average used to matter... Selectors are making small efforts to see if players can score runs in tough conditions and versus good bowlers.

IPL helps somewhat for the second criterion . Even Rinku would not have come into limelight if not for IPL

Always look beyond the numbers. Rinku had a great start to his FC career, averages 100+ in two seasons but has tapered off massively since his T20 career started to flourish. No FC 100s in last two seasons. In fact has 2 FC 100s in last 30 FC matches.

Till last season he was in FC squads. Played for India A last January during England Lions tour. His scores were 0, 38, 0 across two unofficial tests which our A side won. Later in the year, though not named originally in the Four squads for Duleep Trophy, he did come in as replacement in India B, but scored 6. Needs to start scoring big runs in FC cricket again to be in contention with so much talent going around.

This guy should be our #3. He is currently batting on 98, single-handedly keeping his team alive in a Ranji Trophy match. Clutch.  And his stats as of today (and will only improve after this match is completed):

51  matches, 73 innings,  12 n.o.,   3501 runs,   165* HS,  57.39 average,    70.55 SR,.  8 100s, 22  50s

Sadly, Rinku has been typecast as a T20I finisher. Even in IPL, KKR rarely sends him at the top or even middle overs.

Why is Rinku Singh not being considered for test batting spot .He has better stats than Sai, Sundar, Jurel and Nair.He can hit long ball if needed if he is batting with tail.
