Why do we have so many strokeless/ tuktuk batsmen in the test line up in the IPL era?

I disagree. Pant has always batted in that manner specially when wickets around him have fallen. Take test in BD as an example. He has the best defence pace or spin.

But against Harmer he was totally out of place. First time i see him genuinely struggling to pick what was coming. 23 balls 5 runs 18 dots 5 singles.

I am going to be honest I watched the test in bits and prices so going by what you wrote. My point was more towards controlled aggression.

It is not due to aggression he failed. He just could not pick Harmer at all He couldn't even defend confidently.

Not really. He looked out of sorts in a home test against England on a challenging wicket. This is the game where Jurel dragged us from the jaws of defeat to a winnable position, scoring 90 odd. Gambhir tweeted then that centuries are milestones while 90s win the game for the team or something to that effect.

Wouldn't read too much into that. Harmer has done that to every lhb the previous test. Dismissed solid looking Sundar both innings with his offbreaks.

This is test match. If you are already two down and wickets keep falling your general approach is going to be defensive. Jaiswal foolishly got out twice  to semers on a spinning wicket much like Rohit did against Henry on a spinning wicket.

But you have to see how Stubbs batted. He just couldn't get to grips with pitch on the same surface. That is called assessing conditions.  If 2 more guys had batted exactly like Sundar we would have walked this target.  He had a control percentage of 88. His role was to keep wicket sfrom falling. But if you keep losing from other end that is not his fault. You are not up against time here. You have 3 whole days left. That is exactly how Bavuma batted. He made runs. If you can't even defend how can you attack on a difficult pitch.
