Players also have to be held to account

Good point. This whole focus on "looking the part" removes objectivity from the process the fruits of which we are reaping now.

Sarfaraz has a domestic average of 60+. He has a test 150 and 3 50s in the 6 tests he has played. Those are not numbers of a person who cannot handle all types of bowling. KL Rahul is playing 65+ tests with an average of 35 but apparently Sarfaraz's career has to be over after 6 tests !

Others like Jurel and Sai, as you rightly point out, have leapfrogged him with inferior records and the assumption that their game is superior in some conditions ( pace or spin friendly) without any numbers backing up this subjective vibes based assessment.

I never said Sarfraz is Bradman but you cannot drop a guy on basis of some whim or because coach did not like him or selector did not like him.Let him fail he will be shown the door.

Speaking of KL he played in that Banglore test and batted at number 6 after Sarfraz batted at number 4 failed in both innings scoring  0 and 12 failing, India still had chance in that test if he scored some runs there in second inning .He mysteriously disappears from from next two tests vs NZ only to appear as opener restarting his career nth time in Australia and England.

Rahul looks part , Jurel looks part, Sai looks part, Nair looks part but Sarfraz does not look part. He never gets any blame for anything but has played over a decade playing 68 tests with avg of 35 screwing Indian team in all formats. But he is going to captain India in odis. Guys like Shami and Sarfraz are sitting out.

Get fair minded coach with some brain and decent selectors, the same players will thrive.Players are most insecure human beings coach should be giving them confidence but not screwing them.

Did Jurel look convincing, he has not reached 15 when playing as batsman. Sai has not looked to be even belonging in international cricket even after playing on flattest pitches.

Has Sundar looked part here, on a pitch where other offspinner won the match, he took one wicket in the series.

You cannot be on trial every match as player.Anyone with right mind could see Sarfraz had ability to play international cricket.

He should never been hired as Coach  in the first place, he stole credit from both Coach and Captain for winning IPL plus given his combative and abrasive nature as a player always trying to steal credit  and discrediting others.

Jurel was the one who looked any good in that A game they played that is why he was picked. Apart from stats there is some element of gut feel too that has to go into selections else you don't need coaches and selectors, a spreadsheet and AI will be enough.

This is true but that gut-feel element is by definition subjective. It will vary from person to person. That is why you will always have the captain select the playing XI but to have subjectivity all the way up the system is obviously not going to work as a process. Sarfaraz , a top domestic performer, is seemingly permanently out of the reckoning for tests despite all objective metrics demand his inclusion in the batting pool vying for selection.

Ultimately whether the gut-feel driven decisions in selection are actually leading to results is the key issue. The evidence so far is pretty clear that Gambhir/Agarkar's gut-feel is leading to people playing tests when they are out of their depth when compared to opposition of a reasonable standard.

Sai, Jurel, Reddy underperformed massively.

Jaiswal and KL didn't fire too.

Pant was reckless.

Gill was injured and unavailable.

Only Washington and Jadeja batted decently.

Overall one of the worst sereis for batters.

Sai, Jurel and Reddy are carrying inflated expectations without the level of performance at test level that should underpin any expectations.

KL performed at his normal level. Again inflated expectations are not justified for him when the stats over a long career tell you a different story.

Jaiswal had an off series and looks muddled and not switched on.

Pant should be a wicketkeeper who can bat. Making him as the backbone of the batting by sending him at number 5 where he often has to carry the innings is pointless as his game and temperament is not suited to that role. He is always going to take risks. It can work when he is surrounded by a functioning batting order but ultimately India are better off doing how every other country ( now and historically) uses their keepers. They should not be core batsmen. If he is given that role then he should be asked to give up his gloves.

A lot of this fiasco is basically about lack of role clarity and the inability to use the available resources properly. That is on the TM much more than individual players.

100% correct. The problem with this TM is they want Pant to be Superman every match.

Pant is WK he should be batting at number 6  followed by one allrounder Jadeja plus 4 bowlers.

If you start taking away either batsman or bowlers and replace them with pseudo allrounders you end up with this mess.

If your bowlers can bat like Cummins or Starc it is a bonus but you cannot be playing some guy like Reddy there because he can hold bat and expect team to do well. Bowlers are there to take wickets.

Having clear clarity of roles  is very important.India was extremely lucky that Ashwin and Jadeja were decent batsmen. But their primary role was bowling.

If most of the team is underperforming, it means dressing room atmosphere is shot. We have to see how they perform under different coach.

This is my feeling as well. Guys like Jaiswal is known for racking up massive numbers. Him missing is sort of a reflection of that.

Were players not held accountable for NZ fiasco, how many players from that series are playing now.

No they weren't. All went to Australia, failed and then realised better exit.

Sarfraz has not played since NZ series .Roko and Ashwin retired but we still have Gambhir.
