gakgupta Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Everyone talks about the decline of Sri Lanka cricket. I think that’s the wrong framing. The real question: Why was Sri Lanka so insanely good from ~1994 to 2008? Before 1994 → Mostly mediocre/minnow-ish After 2008 → Back to mediocre/weak Only 10–12 years of sustained elite performance. That looks less like a decline and more like a freak golden aberration. 1996 WC, Jayasuriya-Aravinda revolution, Murali, Sanga, Mahela, Vaas—an insane cluster of generational talent in one window. So what actually happened in those years? Pure talent coincidence? Better admin/school system then? Murali skewing Test results? Mindset revolution? Hot take: SL didn’t decline. They just reverted to their historical mean. Thoughts?

Perhaps that weirdo psychiatrist who is probably a Pakistani pretending to be Mancunian Aussie because of too unhealthy a Pawkee obsession also made one highlighting this.
Gollum Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Only till 2008? 2009 WT20 final 2011 WC final 2014 WT20 champs 2014 test series win in Eng 2018-19 test series whitewash in RSA Mediocre/weak? Forward Defence and tapandrun 2
Vickydev Posted February 16 Posted February 16 I mean they played in 4 ICC finals from 2009 till 2014.
rollingstoned Posted February 16 Posted February 16 (edited) Until 2015 or so they were solid. Never really recovered from the retirements of Sanga and mahela. I get what you mean though, when I think SL I think of a bitch of a team to play at home with a legendary mid innings spin choke in white ball cricket. Not much beyond that. Herath and prime Mathews, Karunaratne. SL was quite strong at home even till 2017-18, whitewashed Aussies 3-0 in 2016 IIRC. Anyway that 2-0 win in RSA must rank as one of the greatest feats by any SC team...came in 2018-19.
Gollum Posted February 16 Posted February 16 For a population of 20 million, and being from the developing world, I'd say they are punching above their weight even today. Lone Wolf 1

A few guys who should've been mainstays flattered to deceive. Chandimal also not what he promised to be around 2015. I remember the gun inniins he played in the world Cup in 2015 against Aus. They had a whole revolving door of spinners too who just disappeared. Lone Wolf 1

Singh bling Posted February 16 Posted February 16 By same logic West Indies just had golden period of 75-85. They started fading afterwards

deathmonger Posted February 16 Posted February 16 SL punches above their weights considering they have half the people of Kerala. They have greater achievements than Pakistan, a country with more than 12x the population and they themselves are not rich. I think what happened in recent years is cricket has become more "professional" with matchups, analytics, fitness regimes, injury rehabilitation which has helped out the first world countries and disadvantaged countries like SL, Pak, WI. You can't coast on "talent" anymore. India with its massive population and growing economy is still thriving but the others don't have that.
Ultimate_Game Posted February 16 Posted February 16 They had that golden generation and since they retired haven't looked the same. Their system is not as strong to replace star players. They're still looking for replacements for Sangakarra, Jayawardene, Malinga, Dilshan, Vaas, Murali (the chucker). They were able to cover up spin due to no. of spinners they have but lag everywhere else.

Anyway in tests, they went undefeated for 15 odd years. #1 for 20 years. Won in every country multiple times. That is the ultimate legacy. Edited February 16 by Gollum rollingstoned 1
bowl_out Posted February 16 Posted February 16 They were a force until the Malinga era got over. They had two gen of great players come in at the same time: 1996-2003 : ATG-level core : Jayasuriya, Aravinda, Ranatunga, Attapattu, Vaas, Murali and some quality utility players like Kalu, Mahanama, Tilakaratne 2005-2014 : ATG-level core : Sanga, Mahela, Dilshan, Malinga and quality utility players like Tharanga, Herath, Mendis The present team still has decent utility players, but no-one who can take it to the level of Sanga, Mahela, Jayasuriya etc. tapandrun 1
tapandrun Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Its a wrong pretext, Sl cricket only got bad in last 8-10 yrs, correctly mentioned by other posters. Sl was most consistent asn team when it came to icc events some 10 yrs back. The dip/drop is same issue that Ind is facing with their tests side, alot of established players went-out together and there were not many in the pipe-line. Then the biggest issue was post snaga and mahela none of sl batters were considered that good for IPL level, hindering the development and fast evolution of their game. SL tried their own league but its not working out much. Not getting to play leagues is a big set-back, other teams are getting players who are ready for intnl cricket and sl cricket still have to judge the players on potential and give them chances to develop, where is other players playing the leagues have already gone though that cycle in the leagues and are good out of box in intnl cricket. Also till now only sl spinners are getting picked in these leagues and batters are not getting much traction so they are behind the curve but multiple cycles.
