how do you define a sepcial knock in IPL now?

is it 150 from 80? wouldn't three lots of 50 from 20 be fat better? is it 80 from 30 which is commonplace now. furhtermore many of those bats end up on the losing side.

for vaibhav it's his age in which case he will cease to be special when he's 20. for abhishek it's his pretty face.

if you want to really make a name for yourself beyond a pay cheque you have to do it in tests. india doesnt need two teams it needs a tougher sport to crack

A knock that wins the game for the team from a difficult situation. Mostly chasing.

^^More than anything, this^^ But the stakes also matter. For instance, a knock that wins from a difficult situation, but it is a dead rubber match in a bilateral series would not make the cut.

Having said that, it can also be knocks that give the team a chance put the match away early - this is the case with monster PP knocks from Vaibhav, Abhishek, Priyansh Arya etc.

There are no hard and afst rules. You can produce a special knock and still lose. For instance Markram's 100 in SA against us was a specia knock even though it was in lost cause.

Special knock is something that will be talked about for many years, so that has to happen in tournaments like world cups. Something that happens in ipl,  which happens every year won't really create that magic.

IN IPL some knocks are talked about a lot for years. Baz's opening knock because it set the tone for IPL. Gayle's 175. Raina's power play madness 87(25) these records have stood the test of time.

It's all about the context. A 40(25) ball in a match-winning ICC tourney final trumps a 100(35) in a bilateral or a group match. For me the match context is the biggest differentiator, i.e. how important is the match in the bigger scheme of things. An ICC tourney final performance > knockouts >> group stages >>>> bilaterals. That's why I rate Marlon Samuels' knocks in the two T20 finals as the best. And Abhishek and Samson's performances are top of the charts. That's the reason they trump Kohli's knocks coz it didn't lead to any trophy.

The bowling equivalent of the knocks I mentioned above are Bumrah's performances in 2024 and the recent WT20 coz he was the difference and led to 2 ICC trophies. I guess in IPL it's the same story, and a knock in the final > playoffs >>> group matches. Reason why Raina is a true MVP coz he upped his game in playoffs.

removing occasion and emotional values:--

fifty under 20 balls

Ton under 48 balls

Ton under 40 balls

These innings puts the side in v.v.strong position.

For a lower middle order batter ::

An inning consists of high 6/ball %

Foe last 6 yrs::--

Milestone Team Win % Statistical Context
Ton under 48 balls 90.15% Higher frequency; often occurs in successful, controlled chases.
Ton under 40 balls 89.09% Rare "freak" events; small sample size means one loss drops the % more.
Fifty under 20 balls 79.60% Crucial for finishers, but lower impact on total runs vs. a century.

That is very logical. And perhaps totally rational.

However, a special knock, has to get an emotional reaction from the spectator. It has to be one where the moments of magic are remembered for long.

Not one where you plot a graph of 1000s of innings and identify the outlier.

For example, Dhoni’s winning six in the 2011 WC Final was a part of a very special knock.

Maxwell's 201 falls under that category. That is why for me 175 from Kapil devl will always be the greatest ODI innings. A loss there would have kicked India out.

it seems there is zilch nothing that’s inherently precious about an IPL innings. it’s not a six or even lots of them. it’s not a long innings. It’s not even 100 of 40. it’s not conquering conditions. everyone has responded with some version of context. if today an opener for the side batting first makes 80 of 30 you’re indifferent. we have almost reached the limit of what a batsman can do and lots of batsmen are hitting that limit. in football we all know what a miracle goal looks like. there’s no equivalent here. many of you defaulted to internationals which come every 4 years (or they should) which wasn’t the question. what are the top 3 special knocks of IPL 2026 so far? would there be a consensus? odd that the organisers haven’t popularised such a notion at the end of the trophy. it’s all orange caps because thats simple maths. food for thought!

check this stat.

in IPL 2026 so far an individual score of 100 plus has more often than not put you on the losing side.

even crazier. the same is true of 110+, 120+, 130+, 140+ and 150+ (130+ to be fair is even odds). kl rahul being the stand out failure to win

warning I asked AI, should be easy to check but seems about right

the orange cap is an utter nonsense

Next goal is a century by a batsman inside power play.

Raina nearly did it in 2010 IIRC. He got out on 87 in the 6th over with CSK chasing 200 odd. They imploded after Raina's dismissal after Raina had put the on the path to an easy win. That Raina knock was special and would've probably been the greatest IPL knock had CSK won.

That is why that knock is still talked about. Head made 84. That's it.
