Malcolm Merlyn Posted August 7 Posted August 7 Sudden premature retirement of the great Ashwin has the team vulnerable even 2nd rate Lankan batters are making fun oof the present indian spin attack, no bite no nothing. Time to fall at ashwin annas feet n ask him to come and take the ball.
Lone Wolf Posted August 7 Posted August 7 Anna won't do anything here on a Uber flat deck designed to waste India's preparation Manucrick, singhvivek141, Sgattick10 and 6 others 9

singhvivek141 Posted August 8 Posted August 8 Going back to retired players are actually gonna setup a very wrong precedence. Its like going back to your ex....you had good days, you had fun. But that chapter is now over. Look at the future and build the next gen off spinners...Saransh is a stop gap, Washy hasnt developed his bowling and Kotian isnt a world beater either. We should have looked towards Mahesh Pithiya or Yuvraj Dodiya instead of Saransh for this tour. Both are young, Mahesh Pithiya can bat as well. express bowling and Manucrick 2
express bowling Posted August 8 Posted August 8 Ashwin played all 3 tests when we lost 0-3 to NZ at home. His decline was evident then. The players who are not there always seem better in our minds when we lose. cricspirit, bouncers, Manucrick and 1 other 4
putrevus Posted August 8 Posted August 8 (edited) Not asking Ashwin to make a comeback but he still is best test spinner in the country even today. He had one bad series. He won first test with bat and ball and MOS against Bangladesh. His replacement Sundar is pure bits and pieces player, but the greatest match winner of India deserved better send off. This series will show if India has any spinners worth investing time. Edited August 8 by putrevus
SecondSlip Posted August 8 Posted August 8 Ashwin doesn’t even have the fitness to survive 20 overs cricket. He got injured and ruled out of both BBL 2026 & MLC 2026. No way in hell can he survive 5 day cricket. He retired at the perfect time!

Manav Suthar is good though, perfect replacement for Jadeja. express bowling, Suhaan and bouncers 3

You are talking about Saransh Jain? Do we have any good offspinners in the system? There will be no perfect replacement for a giant like Jadeja, let us see how well Suthar does in this series alonside Jadeja. Jadeja should be a lesson for every youngster, he kept improving every year by playing FC cricket.

There is one Yuvraj Dodiya as well, but dont think he can bat...around 25. Jadeja improved a lot due to unprecedented and unshaken support from MSD. I have never seen such support from a captain. He strategically used Jadeja in shorter format as well by bringing him right at the time when a wkt falls in. Spinners anyway start their returns when they enter in 30s...in their younger days they remain inconsistent as they can. Have seen this trend with Kumble, Bhajji, Ashwin, Swann, Vettori, Jadeja, Lyon. Edited August 9 by singhvivek141

Jadeja is one of kind I doubt we will see another player like him or Ashwin any time soon.Ashwin was high on Saran Jain, let us see if he gets a chance in this series.

Spinners usually improve in their second half. Rangana Herath is another example I missed...he became a beast in his 30s. Anyway, Manav Suthar...Sai Kishore are two of the best left arm spinners in domestics...coz they are tall and get turn as well. Saurabh Kumar & Shams Mulani are tiny and thats why they dont get much bounce. Nishant Sindhu is more in the mould of Axar Patel and bowls with a flatter trajectory. But he is a defensive bowler and hence more suited for white ball. His batting is his stronger suit, though he has to work on his power hitting, but even Jadeja is weak in that segment.

You are talking about the best spinners in history of the game. Not everyone becomes that great even in 30s. You don't need power hitting to become very good allrounder in tests.

bsriharsha Posted August 20 Posted August 20 Ashwin had a good run. Could have been picked for more matches (especially overseas) but the team seemed to use spinners as containing forces there and preferred jadeja because of his better ability with the bat and better fielding. Doesn't mean that Ashwin didn't do his share of scoring. But he missed out on some test matches because the team could only take one spinner. Ashwin isn't coming back. But the best thing for him to he doing is to be coaching in NCA. We need him to roll out the next big off spinner.
