Dhawal Kulkarni receives maiden call-up Cricinfo staff February 13, 2009 Dhawal Kulkarni, the Mumbai seamer, has got a call-up to the Indian Test squad for the three Tests against New Zealand. The call was unexpected since he made his first-class debut six months back. L Balaji makes a return to the Test side after being recalled to the one-day side earlier this month. Looks like Sreesanth to failed to make into the squad. Munaf is there in the test squad with Zaheer and Ishant. What about the ODIs? Here is the full news: Kulkarni, Balaji included for NZ Tests © Cricket NirvanaFriday, February 13, 2009 12:45:51 PM Mumbai: Subramaniam Badrinath and Dhawal Kulkarni were included to India’s 16-man Test squad for the forthcoming three-Test tour of New Zealand in March. Mahendra Singh Dhoni will attempt to lead India to its first series-win in New Zealand since 67-68. The national selectors announced the squad for upcoming tour on Friday. Dinesh Karhik and Laxmipathy Balaji were the new additions to India’s most recent Test squad in December for the series at home against England. Harbhajan Singh, who missed the ODI series against Sri Lanka, returns from an injury to lead the spin-attack. Opening duo Quite easily the easiest job for the selection meeting as the duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir have emerged as the best opening duo in the sport today – in whatever format. The selectors emphasised so much confidence in the Delhi batsmen that they refused to include a back-up opener in Murali Vijay, Abhinav Mukund or Wasim Jaffer. Dinesh Karthik is also capable of opening the batting in case of an injury. Pace-attack The formidable duo of Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma will be joined by India’s best third seamer on paper Munaf Patel, newcomer Dhawal Kulkarni and Laxmipathy Balaji, who last played a Test match for India in 2005 against Pakistan. Irfan Pathan, Rudra Pratap Singh, S Sreesanth and Pankaj Singh were the notable seamers who were included from the 16-man Test squad. Middle-order Yuvraj Sngh, who played a few breathtaking knocks during the RBS Cup Test series against England, retains his place as the first choice replacement for the now retired Sourav Ganguly in India’s famed middle-order batting. Tamil Nadu batsman Subramaniam Badrinath edged out Rohit Sharma as the back-up option for India in case of a considerable form slump or injury for either of Yuvraj Singh, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman or Sachin Tendulkar during the course of the series. Badrinath, who was a part of the four-Test series against Australia at home, did not feature in a single game. The likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Akinkya Rahane, Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina were ignored by the selectors for the challenging tour. Back-up keeper As was expected, Tamil Nadu captain Dinesh Karthik edged out Gujarat captain Parthiv Patel as Dhoni’s back-up wicketkeeper on the long tour. Karthik has been prolific form since the 2008-09 Ranji season. He slammed back-to-back centuries in the Duleep Trophy semi-final against North Zone and steered his side to the final of the event. Spin-attack Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra form the spin duo on pitches that will permit just a single spinner in India’s playing XI. Both spinners bowled in good rhythm during India’s 1-0 victory over England at home in December but will fight it out for just the one spot. Harbhajan will in all likelihood start as the first choice for Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Test Squad Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain and Wicketkeeper) Virender Sehwag (Vice Captain) Sachin Tendulkar Gautam Gambhir Yuvraj Singh Rahul Dravid VVS Laxman M Vijay (earlier it was Subramaniam Badrinath ) God knows what prompted that change! Dinesh Karthik (Wicketkeeper) Harbhajan Singh Amit Mishra Ishant Sharma Munaf Patel Dhawal Kulkarni Zaheer Khan L Balaji ODI squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Irfan Pathan, Munaf Patel, Pragyan Ojha, Dinesh Karthik (wk) Twenty20 squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Munaf Patel, Pragyan Ojha, Dinesh Karthik (wk) The Itinerary: February 20: Arrival in New Zealand. Hopefully, Sreesanth is very very disappointed (like you are), and takes it as a challenge and forgets the dancing-donkeying business and gets even more wickets in domestics to break the door to the Intl squad.

Jeez how can they do this.. This is what will happen i tell you India will hae immense amount of success on this tour thanks to the reuglar Indian players. and people would forget that selectors did blunder by leaving out rp singh and sreesanth or pravin kumar for that matter. serously i am disappointed not to see anyone of them.

i think they are considering PK as limited overs specialist.
If Pathan can take 3-4 wickets in Perth, I am sure PK can take a 5-for against NZ in NZ. (Of course it remains to be seen what quality of pitches will be produced). I am also disappointed at Badri not making the ODI squad. This was the time to kick Rohit out and see what Badri could do in ODIs on seaming wickets.

The selectors can be replaced by some robots then, no? Select regular players...do a coin toss among the remaining 10 in fray.

Oh man, is Sreesanth overlooked or is still under the injury cloud ? If he is under injury cloud, why don't the BCCI make sure that he gets the best possible treatment so that he can recover ASAP. Though he is an idiot, he does not realize his ability of utilizing seaming conditions outside subcontinent. Something in tells me that Sree is being overlooked as he did play couple of domestic games with fair bit of success but more importantly he bowled quite reasonable number of overs. If India could pick Balaji (who is just out of injury) I am sure Sree would have been picked if Dhoni/selectors wanted him be to included in the plan. Feeling sorry for him, but he totally deserves this and hopefully learns his effing lesson(s).

Hope so, and hope the time he spends dancing with the stars, and jiving with the celebrities will now be spent to get his bowling top notch.

Badrinath should have been given a chance. they should have replaced him with Rohit Sharma in ODI squad. Rohit has been nuking binary digits from a while now...
i agree with dropping sharma, but not picking Badri for ODIs.he seems to take a long time to settle n struggles to up the ante.i would have picked Virat Kohli instead

Dhawal is an excellent pick. He's no flash in the pan sorta-player. He is someone for the very long term future. Balaji found a place probably on the back of earlier swing exploits in Pakistan. But the batting picks are selecting. For three fast bowling positions, the selectors have picked no less than 6 fast bowlers in the team. But for 6 batting positions, they've selected just 7 special batsman. That need not entirely bad since most of the batsman have their batting positions locked down. But surely, there was space for another middle order batsman? Another interesting thing to note; Does this mean the niether RPS nor Sreesanth figure in the selector's list of top 25-27 Indian players in the country?
