Farook was a average keeper. He fluffed easiest of catches many a times. Having Manchester as home he was prefferednon England tours. Was counter attacking batsmen and more of stroke player.

Saha is much better and the best keeper we had.  His batting is below average though as compared to many keepers though.

to be fair he opened the innings against the new ball and averaged 33 as an opener in an era of uncovered pitches for mroe than half the tests he played.

Played a huge hand with the bat as opener when India first won in 1967/68 in NZ. This was first series win outside the sub.

I think controlling for the era , the general weakness of the Indian team and his batting position probably one of the best batsman who was wicket keeper India has ever produced.

He was an average keeper. But him as opener protected our middle order well against the new ball.

Spot on, capable opener, entertaining to watch, but rubbish keeper Farokh saheb.

Saha is GOAT keeper, ok bat for that position (#7 or #8) and played some vital knocks. Gilly changed the trend about what was expected from wicket-keepers, otherwise historically max importance to keeping abilities, runs a bonus.

Is it Dhoni or is it sumbody else ??? Syed kirmani Farokh Engineer or Parthiv Patel ???? Remember i m just asking wicketkeeper not wkt keeping batsmen, just in terms of Wicketkeeping skills :winky:

10+ years old this thread. Thread topic is about keeping skills, not batting.

Saha must be Knott level (GOAT contender), all others a league below.

Tamhane, Kirmani can be lumped together in next category, excellent but far from tier 1. They never had to keep wickets to :flame:quicks.

Dhoni misses out because he discouraged our quicks, albeit excellent against spin. He will be in tier 3 alongside  More, Mongia. Good, safe keepers, esp against spin.

Some other quality ones like Vishy, Pandit but played very few matches....hard to rate.

Budhi, Farokh primarily batsmen.

Pappu and DK have a special place on this list, especially the former.

He did not open in all innings. I remember he played in middle order in many a matches once Sunny the opener made debut and solved one opening spot. Ashok Mankad was also there who opened alongside Sunny. Farook batted in lower middle order as well during those times. Having said that Farook justified his spot as he could contribute handy runs himself and get into good partnerships with batsmen at other end. Agree regarding the point you make regarding his batting considering various context, some of which you have already mentioned.

I think its a question of utility

MSD- captain, batsman (lower middle order) and ok keeper to pacers but excellent keeper to spinners

Saha- excellent keeper overall and handy with the bat lower down the order

Being a captain in todays era of cricket is a huge mental load. To be keeper and a batsman, i think MSD added more utility.

If we are to play with Saha overseas then IMO you need to bat deep. Jadeja's batting has improved leaps and bounds. If we play Saha Pandya, Jadeja + 3 frontline seamers overseas we get that depth till 8, but it still means the top 5 need to be firing consistently enough. We cannot go through another overseas cycle where the openers and Rahane averaging less than 40.

Realistically we need to make a call in Feb 2020 if Saha with the bat is really something India need when we are away to NZ. That tour if we win will set us up well for the Test cricket championships.

from what I have seen , I think Mongia & Moore were easily the best in last 20 years.

Mongia was a great keeper till he decided to join hands with azhar and Ajay the traitors.

Saha is not that much of a rabbit with the bat. prior to injury, I think there was a 1.5-2 yr period where he averaged nearly 40. agree that top 5 need to step up consistently in case we play 5 bowlers. on green pitches, bhuvi will also play, which will extend batting to 9.
