The Outsider Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 I "learned" French ages back, but it was more of an excuse to go chick hunting at Alliance Francaise. Should have spent more time on it because I picked it up quite well with pretty basic effort in 9 months. Was able to make a half decent conversation and read some basic books/magazines without mentally translating too much. Can't remember much now though. Am planning to visit South America some time in the next year or two, so was thinking of learning Spanish. This thread might have been the kick I was waiting for! From a strictly utility point of view, Spanish is probably the most useful given the number of countries it is spoken in. But in the end it comes down to the reason you want to learn a new language I guess.

This thread might have been the kick I was waiting for! From a strictly utility point of view, Spanish is probably the most useful given the number of countries it is spoken in. But in the end it comes down to the reason you want to learn a new language I guess. That is what even I have been told. I can't find the link now but there was a site which compared which language is easy to learn, is most widely spoken etc. Spanish was the one that had a wider reach.. As for me learning, one I want to make better use of my time and also teach my son a new language and learn along with him.

punjabi_khota Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Spanish is very easy to learn compared to French. For someone in the americas, Spanish is the obvious 2nd language to learn, but if you are based in Europe, French and German would be the top choices.

Blue-collar that I am, I just don't get the "classy" tag attached to knowing a language. It's just another language. I can speak Tamizh, Kannada, Hindi, some Marathi, English and some Malayalam. Why would that be any less classy? To answer the OP: For utility - Spanish. Otherwise, Austrian - they say it's a fun language to learn :-)!!

I just said other things being constant, french is a classy language. :winky:

We had to take 1 semester of Spanish here in High School in states, so that made me want to continue to learn it. I didn't really took another semester after that, but just talkign to the local spanish people here and trying to speak with them, helped me learn the language. I can speak pretty well, but not fluent. I also have to mention that Spanish is the most easily language to learn considering plenty of words are similar to English.
