Ponting's handling of Nathan Hauritz http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/ponting-lays-down-law-to-spinner-20101008-16c50.html

RICKY Ponting has made it clear Nathan Hauritz needs to take up his advice to bowl more like Indian rival Harbhajan Singh. Hauritz revealed that he was directed to bowl with angles mirroring Harbhajan in the first Test in Mohali, and that because it didn't work, he wanted to revert to his traditional style today in Bangalore. "If you look at angles Nathan creates and the shape of the ball compared to what Harbhajan does, it's chalk and cheese. What I was trying to get him to do by bowling wider at the crease was to get the ball into the rough areas a bit more.
Punter is clearly losing it here. Trying to teach a specialist spinner how to bow. :cantstop: WTF , is Terry Jenner doing ?

"I'm the one who asked him to try some different things, and they're things I asked him to work on about 18 months ago," Ponting said. "When he first came back into the side in South Africa, I worked with him long and hard, trying to get him to create different angles for a batter, and that's talking through a batsman's eyes and what I've always found hard about facing off-spinners. :punter:

I guess aussie coach forgot to let ponting know - just because he can't handle off-spin from certain angles (well, any angle) doesn't mean that it will work against other batsmen.

Why Bhajji as the idol? Punter should be looking to find another warnie! Has the OZ lvl dropped so low that they are now looking for someone like Bhajji to start off with? :rotfl:

Bedi slams Ponting over Hauritz http://www.foxsports.com.au/cricket/australia/indin-great-bishen-bedi-takes-ricky-ponting-to-task-over-handling-of-nathan-hauritz/story-fn2mcu3x-1225936292209 India great Bishen Bedi takes Australia captain Ricky Ponting to task over handling of Nathan Hauritz * Will Swanton in Bangalore * From The Daily Telegraph * October 09, 2010 10:01AM India great Bishen Bedi has questioned Ricky Ponting's captaincy in the aftermath of Australia's first Test loss in Mohali. Bedi, the revered former spinner who took 266 Test wickets, said Ponting did not know how to deploy his slow bowlers and that he was disappointed in the way he used No.1 spinner Nathan Hauritz in Australia's one-wicket loss to India on Tuesday. "I think Ricky Ponting is a very good captain but I'm not sure he's a very good spinner's captain," Bedi said. "It didn't matter when Shane Warne was his spinner. Shane Warne didn't need a captain, he was his own." Bedi was asked at the ICC Awards on Wednesday night to help Hauritz prepare for the second and final Test, starting on Saturday in Bangalore. Bedi rejected the offer with the novel excuse, "I don't have any shoes," but had no reluctance in revealing his thoughts on the treatment of Hauritz during the Mohali meltdown. Hauritz revealed he was disappointed at Ponting's preference for the bowling of Marcus North at the end of the series opener. Bedi rates Hauritz the equivalent of England's Graeme Swann and pointed to Ponting's questionable management of his spinner. "The way Nathan Hauritz is handled is wrong. People have to have more faith in him. I think he is a brilliant off-spinner," Bedi said. "He's used as a stock bowler but I think he is better than that if they let him attack. "There is only one reason why Graeme Swann is more successful. The captain of England (Andrew Strauss) uses Graeme Swann better than the captain of Australia uses Nathan Hauritz. "Ponting doesn't know how to use him. "The Australian team have to give Nathan the confidence and support he deserves. He is your best spinner but he's not treated like that. "I have a lot of time for his bowling. More time for him than some. Instead of Hauritz being told how to bowl, they should let Hauritz tell them what he wants to do. I get frustrated when I see an off-spinner treated like he was at Mohali." Praise from Bedi is rare. He slams Muttiah Muralidaran as a chucker whose world-record 800 Test wickets were more like 800 run outs. He frowns upon India's Harbhajan but admires Hauritz's classical, effortless technique. "Nathan is not in India to be a tourist," Bedi said. "He's not supposed to be watching Marcus North bowl. "Nathan is a very pure spinner. The ball comes out so cleanly, I think he's outstanding as long as he has the right backing."

Hahaha equivalent to Swann? What is this guy smoking? Hauritz is average at best, he's good enough for one dayers but in test matches he is just not good enough.

Hauritz may or may not be equal to Swann in ability right now. But one thing is for sure. Both have drift and spin and subtle variations. And Ponting once again makes public his lack of man management skills. Hauritz will never be the bowler Harbhajan is. The latter is a chest on bowler so it is natural for him to get the ball to come down in the air at around the batsman's eye level. Hauritz is a side on bowler and he throws it wide outside off stump, gets drift and then spins it off the wicket. He can never do what Harbhajan does. The angles are just now there. Even in approach, Harbhajan never comes too close to the wicket while Hauritz never goes wider!! Describing this as a strange captaincy strategy is just an understatement.

But thats not how cricket is played :) Anyway, I think that Hauritz's line way outside off stump would work for poorer opposition who cant hit an off-spinner through the offside or do it with great hesitation. It works in one day cricket aswell because batsmen are forced to keep up with a run rate. But I dont think he has the skills to be a strike bowler against our lot in test matches. I think he can be much better used as a stock bowler who every now and again, varies his pace (like Marcus North did against Sachin) to sneak a few wickets here and there. Then again, they have Marcus North to do that. The 'variation' that he has (if you can actually call that an arm-ball, lololol) can maybe be used by coming round the wicket sometimes but I dont think it'll trouble any of our main batsmen.

Bedi is right here about Hauritz & Swann. They both did equally well against Pakistan' date='[b']one of the best spin playing team.
