How good is Virender Sehwag in Tests? Good enough to be named among the Legends?

Ofcourse he's a legend already. A batting average of greater than 50 coupled with a strike rate greater than 80+ is peerless. The closest is Gilchrist. And not to mention the fastest Indian to 7000 runs. That in itself is already legendary!! And then he also has to his name, the top 3 highest innings scores by an Indian - 319,309,293. Such dominating cricket in Test cricket! Sehwag

I dont know about legend. But for sure, he has given us many funfilled days and lotsa overs for our ordinary bowling line up to bowl out opposition in the third or 4th innings. RD, SRT and VVS have absolutely no pressure of SR after Sehwag has done his heroics. Unbelievably the best opener in terms of productive scoring. But overall SMG remains our best opener. But luckily we can have two best openers and SMG and Sehwag come in those positions as obvious.

I think For Sehwag conditions or Bowlers dont matter, if he gets going he can score runs on any surface in any country against any bowler conversely he can get out cheaply even in Bangladesh. His avg against England in England is 39 but is only 26.00 at home when playing the same team. To measure Sehwag's greatness based purely of stats will be big folly. He is all time great opener now may become Legend if he keeps going like this for another 30 tests.

He already is a legend. Absolutely no doubt on that. And by the time his career is over after another 5-6 wonderful years, he will silence all his critics and will become one of the greatest ever batsmen. That strike rate opening the batting in tests alone puts him ahead of most other legendary openers.

That is exactly what it is. He got out very cheaply in NZ when bowling could have been at his mercy.

The word Legend is over used and abused. Anybody and everybody is called a legend these days. Having said that I do believe Sehwag is worthy enough of being named an Indian legend. You would be hard pressed to find him not being named in any of the all time India teams as the opening batsman.

Closest that come to Viru is Gilly who never changed his game right through his career. Even Jayasuriya changed his game. It is very very hard to be successful over 7000 runs with this kind of approach. Nobody has done it before. Nobody is likely to do it again.

Virender Sehwag - The name itself creates fumes of restlessness in the bowler's mind.His grace, elegance at strokes, his style of batting ,and more importantly the kind of aggressive mindset he posses, no one could actually contain this man, and deprive him off scoring runs, except by taking his wicket.He doesn't complicate things, he simplifies it.Whenever he is asked anything regarding the skill and talent he possess that makes him such a destructive opener in the world, he doesn't answer diplomatically one bit.His answer will always be "Yes, i think i always play my natural game, when i see the ball in my zone, I hit it". How can you complicate/fabricate this man ? You can't, same logic applies in his batting.He bats like a Prince, a Nawaab and no wonder why is he named "Nawaab Of Najafgarh".People see the swashbuckling strokeplay, his belligerent hitting, but they don't see the finesse and dexterity in his late cuts against the spin, they don't see the calculative part of his attack when he plays the inside out lofted cover drive, they don't see the risk that he takes when he plays a reverse sweep when the bowler tries to contain him, and bowls a negative leg stump line.What we see is just that he plays aggressively, but what makes him play that way and why is he so successful in doing that ? The answer is just one - Its his sheer dominance that makes him so special.When others try and get a sighter, before they play their strokes, he on the other hand, just kills the confidence of the bowler, and takes off slowly every attacking plans that the opposition captain has set, with his graceful strokeplay.He makes it easy for the upcoming batsmen to take his time and settle himself as he scores his runs quicker than a run a ball. When there are 3 slips, 3 in the square cover region, a batsmen would love to get a boundary by splitting the gap by threading a needle through the vacant area there.But this Legend, sees the opportunity, without even thinking about the consequences, he opens the face of the blade and lofts the ball over those men, who are left stranded, watching the ball flying over their heads, and the facial expressions suggesting "What an unbelievable player".This describes Virender Sehwag. Talking about his position in the World's Greatest XI.My answer will be that he will be the first opener in the list, way before any other player.The reason India is No.1 in the Test Rankings is arguably because of his majestic form, and his style makes it that much easier for the captain, and the bowlers since they know they will have more time to bowl at the opposition.He fails all plans and strategies of opposition, and many have tried to restrict his scoring areas, by bouncing him off, bowling short and wide with two Third Mans, Bowling a Leg stump line, etc. etc.But he has never stopped from improvising and shattering the dreams of bowlers from keeping him quiet.All in all,He is a Legend that has revived the glory of Test Cricket.
