ravishingravi Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I thought it was one of the greatest Indian films I have seen in many many years. Truly an international quality film that imbibes all the qualities that Indian cinema at the moment and Indian audiences don't know of. The cinematography was as good as I have seen especially some of the hand held shots and the still shots of Mumbai at work. Kiran Rao, who is making her debut here, clearly is well groomed on world cinema esp. a certain Wong Kar Wai. Some mis en scenes made the movie linger in mind long after I left the theatre. All the perfomances were good esp. the one who played Yasmin. Few movies are as close to the lives of people from Mumbai. Few movies capture the vibrancy, the energy, the dream and brutality of the city like Dhobi Ghaat did. Great film without a shadow of doubt. Too good for Indian cinema imo. There were times I was pinching myself, am I really watching an Indian film. Then ofcourse I could hear some comments in the theatre which assured me I wasn't. Insanely ambitious to believe that the "latka jhatka" "punjabi munda/mundi" "item song" loving Indian audinces would lap this up. It is the most beautiful and ambitious film to come from Indian cinema in last decade.

Through out the movie you transition into the contrast between day and night and how the city changes over time each and every day through Arun's eyes. There's a dialogue in the movie where one of the socialite comments, "nothing important starts before 10 pm in Mumbai" --- obvious transition from gloomy hard stricken day life to bright exuberance of night life enjoyed mostly by upper class yet Marine drive shines like a beacon symbolizing the effort put forth day in and out by the working class of Mumbai. From Dhobis to Socialites -- upper echelon of the rising affluent society....This movie paints the portrait of life in the city diversified yet outreaching.

Pratiek is excellent, i was looking at his upcoming films and he seems to be choosing wisely- a Prakah Jha film with Amitabh and Saif later in the year - a story based on the caste system and and before that a Ramesh Sippy film with Abhishek which is a crime thriller set in Goa... Looking forward to seeing him in good films in the future

Sooda Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 His films are always bit different from the normal crap that passes for films in Bollywood these days..I would not say this is a masterpiece or that AMAZING, but good film for sure.
