THE WTF news of the day thread

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday upheld the death sentence of a Christian women convicted of blasphemy four years ago, as her lawyers vowed to appeal. Asia Bibi, a mother of five, has been on death row since November 2010 after she was found guilty of making derogatory remarks about the Holy Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) during an argument with a Muslim woman. “A two-judge bench of the Lahore High Court dismissed the appeal of Asia Bibi but we will file an appeal in the Supreme Court of Pakistan,†her lawyer Shakir Chaudhry told AFP. Blasphemy is an extremely sensitive issue in Pakistan where 97 per cent of the population is Muslim and unproven claims regularly lead to mob violence. Two high-profile politicians – then Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer and minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti – were murdered in 2011 after calling for reforms to the blasphemy law and describing Bibi's trial as flawed. :WTF: The blasphemy allegations against Bibi date back to June 2009. She was working in a field when she was asked to fetch water. Muslim women labourers objected, saying that as a non-Muslim she was unfit to touch the water bowl. A few days later the women went to a local cleric and put forward the blasphemy allegations. Over a dozen religious clerics — including Qari Saleem who brought forward the initial complaint against Bibi — were present at the court Thursday. “We will soon distribute sweets among our Muslim brothers for today's verdict, it's a victory of Islam,†Saleem told AFP outside the courtroom as the clerics congratulated each other and chanted religious slogans. :fear: Pakistan's tough blasphemy laws have attracted criticism from rights groups, who say they are frequently misused to settle personal scores. Lawyers who defend people accused of blasphemy — and judges seen as lenient — also risk being accused of the crime themselves and regularly face intimidation. Last month a prison guard at the notorious Adiala jail in Rawalpindi shot and wounded a 70-year-old Scottish man with a history of mental illness who is on death row for blasphemy. The jail also houses Mumtaz Qadri, the former bodyguard of governor Taseer who gunned him down in an Islamabad market place. He was given a death sentence but heralded by some as a hero for killing Taseer. Blasphemy carries the death penalty, though Pakistan has had a de facto moratorium on civilian hangings since 2008. Only one person has been executed since then, a soldier convicted by a court martial and hanged in November 2012.

Advert featuring woman’s breasts causes 500 accidents in a DAY

An advertising campaign showing a woman's breasts has been blamed for more than 500 traffic accidents in one day. The massive adverts placed on the side of 30 trucks driving around Moscow showed a woman's breasts cupped in her hands with the slogan 'They Attract' across her nipples. As the trucks trundled around the streets of the Russian capital, they left a trail of carnage as male drivers became so distracted they ploughed straight into each other. A total of 517 accidents were reported. The stunt, by an advertising agency specialising in mobile adverts, backfired after police sent out patrols to round up all the vehicles and impound them until the risque images could be removed. Motorist Ildar Yuriev, 35, said: 'I was on my way to a business meeting when I saw this truck with a huge photo of breasts on its side go by. 'Then I was hit by the car behind who said he had been distracted by the truck. It made me late and left my car in the garage, and although I am insured I am still out of pocket.' Furious drivers across Moscow have reportedly bombarded the agency with compensation claims. A spokesman for AdvTruck.ru, which ran the promotion said: 'We are planning to bring a new advertising format onto the market, encouraging companies to place their ads on the sides of trucks, as we thought this would be a good alternative to putting them on the sides of public transport. 'We wanted to draw attention to this new format with this campaign' he explained. And he added: 'In all cases of accidents, the car owners will receive compensation costs from us that aren’t covered by their insurance.'

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/Spinster-sisters-attack-brother-one-kills-herself/articleshow/45264717.cms CHENNAI: In a case both bizarre and brutal, two unmarried sisters tried to kill their younger brother because he intended to get married, then tried to kill themselves, one dying of self-inflicted injuries to the throat, in Perungalathur on the outskirts of the city on Sunday evening. Manigandan, 32, on Friday informed his sisters Mahadevi, 38, Nirmala Devi, 36, that he planned to get married, an investigating officer said. They instantly voiced their disapproval as he was the sole bread winner of the family. "Manigandan and his sisters lived together after their father, Mangalanathan, remarried after their mother died," the officer said. "He lives in Erode and runs a restaurant there." Manigandan left home in anger when his sisters said he could not get married. When he returned home on Sunday, he and his sisters again got into an argument on the issue. "Mahadevi and Nirmala hit him on the head with a clothes iron and slit his throat," the officer said. "He was injured but somehow escaped from the house and neighbours rushed him to a private hospital." Doctors at the hospital said he required 46 stitches for wounds to the head and neck. Realising that they would face charges of attempted murder, the sisters panicked. They tried to kill themselves by slitting their throats. By then the neighbours had alerted the Perungalathur police about the attack on Manigandan. Policemen went to the house and, finding it locked, broke open the door. They found Nirmala dead and Mahadevi unconscious and bleeding profusely. They rushed her to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and sent Nirmala's body to the Chromepet Government Hospital for postmortem. "Manigandan and his sister Mahadevi are in critical condition," the officer said. Neighbours told the police that the sisters were graduates and Manigandan had completed his bachelor's degree and worked for a private company. Police contacted Manigandan's father Mangalanathan and he arrived in the city on Monday afternoon and claimed Nirmala's body after doctors completed the postmortem.

Bhabhi kisses groom, angry bride walks out of wedding ALIGARH: Everything signaled that the match was made in heaven. Well, if not up there, then certainly on a much-visited social networking site that guaranteed good results. Girl then met boy and a brief period of courtship followed, brightening further the prospect of marriage. No one, however, was prepared for what happened next. The script had suddenly turned from what looked like a happy Karan Johar romcom to a Ram Gopal Varma redux. At the wedding in Aligarh on Thursday night, the bhabhi (sister-in-law) was so excited that her devar (brother-in-law) was tying the knot that she leapt up and kissed him even as the bride and her family looked on in deep disapproval. Undaunted, the bhabhi pulled the bridegroom to the dance floor and shook a leg. That kind of broke the camel's back. A brawl promptly ensued between the two families and the party's venue at Khair Road degenerated into a free-for-all akhara that had the 500-odd guests running for cover. So peeved was the bride's family that they not only beat up members of the baraat but also held the bridegroom captive. Aligarh mayor Shakuntala Bharati, who was present at the scene when it all happened, said, "The boy (bridegroom) had been confined by the girl's family. He was in their custody. Though it was their personal matter, I had to intervene to free the poor man. I had come to give the newly-weds my blessing. But they were gunning for each other. Both come from very good, educated families. So it was a bit of a shock. The groom went back without the bride." Bharati confirmed that though the police was brought in to settle the matter, the families eventually decided not to file cross FIRs. A police officer from the Delhi Gate zone in Aligarh said, "They sought a closed and private solution. I don't think I should comment when we were not involved." http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/Bhabhi-kisses-groom-angry-bride-walks-out-of-wedding/articleshow/45390699.cms?utm_source=TOInewHP_TILwidget&utm_medium=ABtest&utm_campaign=TOInewHP :blink::blink:

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/141204/lifestyle-fashionbeauty/article/dyed-armpit-hair-next-big-beauty-trend roxie.jpg
A hairstylist at Seattle’s Vain salon is credited for starting this trend by dying her coworker’s armpit hair blue. She then wrote a blog post about the process, which is now being credited for starting something of a revolution among young women. Hairstylist Roxie Hunt said she’d always wondered what it would be like to dye someone’s armpit hair, and one day curiosity got the better of her. Roxie’s coworker agreed to have her pit hair dyed to match the blue on her head, and much to everyone’s surprise, the process went swimmingly. Of the experience, Roxie wrote in her blog: “I half expected the color not to stick, thinking to myself that something this cool couldn’t really be possible. And if it was possible, why didn’t people do it all the time? … The color stuck. We laughed and marveled at the beauty of her blue pit hair. It was too good to be true. The color in her pits perfectly matched the color on her head.”

Malala attacker Ehsanullah Ehsan lists ‘jihad’ as skill on LinkedIn A senior Taliban commander, wanted in connection with an assassination bid on Malala Yousufzai’s life, has been found using LinkedIn, listing his skills as “jihad and journalismâ€. Ehsanullah Ehsan has 69 connections on LinkedIn, indicating a sizable network. Ehsan does not hide his associations and openly promotes himself on LinkedIn as spokesman for the Jammat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter group of the Taliban, The Telegraph reported. He describes himself as “self-employed†and says he has been a spokesman since January 2010. Ehsan even lists his skills as “jihad and journalism†and provides details of his school, employment history and language skills. He also includes his photograph. After being approached by the British daily, LinkedIn took down Ehsan’s account on Friday night. A spokesman said the company’s security team had decided to “restrict itâ€, meaning it was no longer in operation. But she said it was not clear if the account belonged to Ehsan or was a fake account, established by another party. She said the IP address of the account suggested it was fake. She said the “lack of Taliban recruiting messages†was another clue.
