i think it's nerves and his first international stage....haven't seen him in IPL too. Hopefully, he comes back with positive mind frame next innings. Will be a huge advantage, if this guy performes for 2 reasons 1) Left hand openers is always good. 2) Need not see murali vijay for atleast sometime

I thought he looked reasonably solid actually. Negotiated a few bouncers quite nicely by swaying and was compact in defence. If anything, he was just a little bit too defensive and was stuck on the backfoot anticipating another bouncer perhaps. Hopefully he can make a solid score in the second innings to take the pressure off him a little.

++ He did handle the short pitched deliveries well. That said, it is the score that counts.

Looked a lot better in the second innings, negotiating some really good bowling under pressure early on after Vijay had fallen for 0. Shame he couldn't push on to a bigger score after doing all the hard work, but promising signs. He is definitely more comfortable on the back foot.

Seeing a lot of it these days in ICF. Mukund, one bad innings - he is not international class, FTB. Raina, one great innings - he is the next best thing after SRT. Bhajji, few okay innings with the ball - he is the worst off spinner, weak link in our bowling Bhajji, one great innings with the bat - great batsman, let's use him as all rounder at 6, above Dhoni.

He was found to be less loose in the 2nd innings. Infact he was middling 90% of the balls. Just the one greedy shot did him in. But given the state of the pitch and lion hearted bowling by Rampaul he did show some improvement. But not a finished product yet.

Despite being an average outing statistically you could say he is more comfortable against raw pace than Badrinath.

He batted well for his 25. I want to see more of him. Would definately give a chance in 2nd test, and won't mind giving another go in 3rd test either. Let's give these domestic champions some time. We can't/shouildn't discard them that easily. They are best among plenty of other great talents to have emerged. Let's use them properly.

He has minimal footwork, isn't good on the front foot, edges too many full pitched deliveries and hardly makes the bowler pay for over-pitching. However looks good against just short of length stuff, his backfoot punches have amazing timing and looked decent enough in the 2nd innings. He reminded me a lot about Sadgoppan Ramesh. However he needs to learn to make it count and play a long innings after seeing off the new ball. Let's wait and see how he performs in the next couple of Tests.

Come on guys judging him based on 1 test on a poor pitch where so many batsmen have failed. Still he had the determination to dig it out and stay there as long as possible. He was actually playing the short ball pretty well, very unlike other Indian batsmen. He should be played in all 3 tests irrespective of his scores. If at all someone has to go, its gotta be Vijay. I think he's just another player who is ruined by the t20. Had a brilliant technique but now he tries to play too many shots, opens the face of his bat too early. He needs 2-3 season domestically to get back his technique right.

The guy needs to go back to FC cricket and when he is 24 he may be ready. Showd loads of character but no class on show or technique. Patel has to play 2nd test

I thought he plays better on front foot rather than back foot when I first saw him...may be extra pace of Edwards and Rampaul and he stayed on back foot..cause these kind pitches batsman do not make too many movements and need to watch the ball carefully...

Some people called him horrible against short pitch bowling. Again a myth or rather a canard spread against this youngster. Has looked comfortable against Edwards. He may not have a pull or a hook shot yet but he ducks/sways against the short balls and thats a good enough technique to handle it. He looked far more comfortable. Was still tentative on the front foot drives, but expect him to do better in the next test.

he has looked more and more as the match has gone on. should be able to get a good idea by the end of the series. seems to have the temperament though, something i would look for in an opener.
