Even more so for those in the glare of the public eye (A CEO of a privately held company has it easier than one with shareholders). Dhoni will have as many detractors as supporters within the BCCI and on the back of this performance the nay-sayers will become vocal and more active in making moves to dislodge him. The balance is tipped against him. It becomes harder now to turn in a good performance simply because you are under more pressure to perform and less sure of your position - another series loss and who knows? Will the team slide further down on their next outing? The chips are stacked against them under Dhoni's captaincy. If Dhoni can stay calm and lead the team to a victory in the next series that will be an outstanding performance.

No divisions, seniors vs juniors, everyone buys into the team concept and plays for each other. That doesn't happen by accident and further more seniors usually don't regard juniors with too much respect in any team spot. Under Dhoni's captaincy there's no question about that. 2. Making fantastic use of the current match situation to change the batting order. How many times have we seen Dhoni or someone else move up the order? Most captains are far too conservative and don't do this, but Dhoni looks to actively put the best player in any given situation rather than just playing out the batting order. 3. Managing to consistently win with an ordinary bowling attack. How many times have we seen India's 4th/5th bowlers like Pathan/Raina/Jadeja really take a pounding? He does a great job of quickly going through the 4th/5th bowlers. 4. Endurance and work ethic. No other player has played so many test/odi/t20 matches as Dhoni over the last few years. Whether it's messed up fingers, niggles, you never hear Dhoni complain or even look uncomfortable on the pitch, he just shows up and does his job. You can't lead the side if you're always getting injured. 5. Trusting Zaheer Khan. Dhoni let's Zaheer set field placings for his own and other's bowling. A lot of captains wouldn't be happy doing that but giving Zaheer a much more senior role gets the best out of the bowling. 6. And finally backing youngsters. When others are berating younger players like Mukund/Raina etc Dhoni quietly and calmly praises their effort and what they have done right. To have the captain's support means the young players don't have to be constantly looking over their shoulder after every bad performance. 7. And finally, Dhoni is one of the few captains that has the balls to take on the BCCI. He has routinely asked for certain types of players, giving specific requests and now has openly questioned the lack of preperation in a joking manner.

Fontaine Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 The question shouldn't be whether Dhoni is a superb captain, the question should be is there anyone else in the team right now that can even come close to doing the job Dhoni does? I don't think so. He's the best captain we have period. The difference between Dhoni and others can be clearly seen right from when he started to take over the test captaincy from Kumble. In one of the last test matches Kumble played, I think he was injured and off the field for two days. Dhoni took over the captaincy and immediately you see the intensity increase, field placings were more attacking and the entire team played with a much harder edge. When Kumble came back, that intensity was gone. Not to mention Kumble routinely took the new ball when it was clearly reverse swinging for Zaheer and others which was a tactical mistake. Dhoni does a great job of giving Zaheer one or two overs in ODI cricket in the 30-35 overs range and in test cricket as well to test if the ball is reversing. This isn't a criticism of Kumble, just an observation that Dhoni is a much better test captain than the guy he replaced.

This guy is no way a superb captain but someone who was in the right place at the right time and personally a likeable bloke but his captaincy skills are way overhyped as seen time and time again. Don't want to start a Dada vs dhoni debate but definetely did not do anything to revolutionise Indian cricket like Dada did.

No matter what u say or do...The history which Dhoni and his team has written cannot be changed by you or anybody in this world now... He is the BEST till now period...hope we get better in future who would show even more fight like him to overcome the feats we have achieved under him...

Firstly I don't wont to make this into a Dhoni vs Ganguly thread but I am trying to distinguish the difference between being succesful and a grea captain. The best example I can give is by the question who is a better captain Waugh,Taylor or Ponting:Waugh-1 WC.Ponting-2 WC,Taylor-0 WC.I would still say Mark Taylor,Followed by Steve Wugh. Another eg; Kapil Dev won the world cup 8 years before Imran Khan but still most of the posters here acknowledge I.K as a better captain than Kapil. Clive Lloyd is the most succesful captain of all time.Not in terms of wc wins or victories but the way he united the WI team into a unit.One might argue the talent available but the way he united them and got the best out of them speaks volumes of his ability as a leader. Where I am going with this is...yes Dhoni is probably one of the most likeable blokes in the Indian squad but when it comes to captaincy,he has benifited from being in the right time at the right place. I am also acknowledging that he looks like the only alternative but he definetely is not a superb captain a lot of people here make him out to be.

Have we tried them yet,Dhoni was a gamble which selectors took in 2007 which paid off,But now we have gambhir who has captained his state side and who is also good enough in all formats .After he gets in to form he should be made test captain atleast.
