ravishingravi Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Arun Jaitley :- There are few people I would fear facing upto in a debate. He is right up there. I have always admired him esp. during the BJP govt. days when he and Pramod Mahajan ( another top orator ) would be BJP's spokesperson. Salman Khursheed :- Inspite of being an imminent lawyer, I think he is sort of embarassed in playing a political line. I think he wants to be more honest but the compulsions of his stream does not allow him to. But I like this man. Sushma Swaraj :- There was an interview with her in Pakistan in 90s that I can vividly remember which was some what hostile and she came out of it with such dignity and grace and yet managed to get a few shots in that. I think it grabbed everyone's attention there and in this country. BJP and RSS have produced some great orators. She is one of them. Narendra Modi :- I am not going to bring the Gujarat riots case since it is sub judice, but there is little denying that he is by far the best administrator this country has seen in recent times. Jay Panda :- A brilliant guy who can argue with clinical precision even if he does not have the pitch of some of his colleagues. India would need more leaders like him Nitish Kumar :- It is quite incredible how everyone expected so much from this man and how much he has delivered in Bihar. He still has a big challenge. P Chidamabaram :- I would have probably rated him as my favourite some time back. Again a great lawyer with terrific command over the language, but his stock has taken a hit recently.
Khalpat Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I agree with your list, these people are my fav also I will also include Manishankar Aiyer and Arun Shourie in the list. Out of the 500 odd members only handful and was just wondering how much big the list would be if I make for the politicans I hate.
ganeshran Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Nitish Kumar - simplicity and determination Pranab Mukherjee - strongly deserving of the PM post
Vijay.Sharma Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Arun Jaitley : Visionary and very good debater Sushma Swaraj : Another visionary who can hold her own. I think she demonstrates a lot of equanimity when talking about issues. Kamal Nath : He is not too popular or in the eye of the media but I think the man is a very sensible politician and a progressive thinker. Jayram Ramesh : Similar to Kamal Nath when it comes to progressive thinking but this guy has a media savvy profile to add to that. Kapil Sibal : Good debater. The only thing I dislike about him is that he comes across as too much of a Nehru family asslicker AK Anthony : Political wisdom personified Praful Patel : Another progressive thinker Chidambaram : Graceful and has a sense of calmness and dignity in him...Dravidesque Sonia Gandhi : Has learned the art and science of leadership like nobody's business. Very impressed with her. In fact I turned pro-Congress when she was visibly leading them and taking tough stances for the first two years since 2004. Congress looks lost without her. Jaswant Singh - comes across as a man of good nature and seems trustworthy Farooq Abdullah : Wise head Brinda Karat : She is a beautiful lady :winky: I'll cheat a bit and include some guys who I think should quit politics now. It is high time these buggers left the scene. The ones I nominate for kicking out of politics - Advani, Rajnath Singh, Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, Karunanidhi, Pawar, Uma Bharti, Mulayam Singh
pinkfreud Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 - Arun Shourie hands down (though I wish he was more active on the political front) - Jairam Ramesh: Really liked the way he handled the Environment Ministry portfolio, particularly in the Vedanta case. Methinks Jayanti 'Pitbull' Natarajan will only undo all the good he did when he had that portfolio. - Nitish Kumar: A model CM who has done a lot for his state - Narendra Modi: Same as above, his alleged communalism notwithstanding - Naveen Patnaik: This guy is very, very low-key, and not many give him the due he deserves. Is supposed to be an honest politician who's done his bit for Orissa- though I'd like to see him stepping up to the likes of Nitish Kumar - Jaswant Singh: Despite the IC 814 fiasco, I think he was a leader with lots of integrity, just like Vajpayee. Ever since these 2 ceased to be politically active, the BJP has only gone downhill. Hmm, now on second thought, maybe I shouldn't have included him since he isn't a 'current' leader anymore, but oh well. - Shashi Tharoor: Not so much for his credentials as a politician as for his articulate language and knowing how to show up in public, unlike the rest of our donkey babus who cant talk to save their lives - Shivraj Singh Chauhan: Don't list him as one of the best at all, but credit him for doing a lot for the upliftment of women in MP Praful Patel : Another progressive thinker What? He's one of the most corrupt crooks in this country!
Prakat Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Nitish. The things he has accomplished with his state is phenomenal. A god-forsaken place that everybody had given up on is looking up and moving forward thanks to his leadership.
ravishingravi Posted August 24, 2011 Author Posted August 24, 2011 Well guys Arun Shourie is no longer in poilitics. He has detached himself from BJP.
Mariyam Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 Salman Khursheed :- Inspite of being an imminent lawyer, I think he is sort of embarassed in playing a political line. I think he wants to be more honest but the compulsions of his stream does not allow him to. But I like this man. What does that mean? P Chidamabaram :- I would have probably rated him as my favourite some time back. Again a great lawyer with terrific command over the language' date= but his stock has taken a hit recently. That bit is true of me too, why am I not your fav politician?. :P One needs much more than a good law mind with a great vocab. to be a politician.Chidambaram is a poor politician IMO, he hardly has any supporters base. There was a massacare of some 70 odd jawans in Dantewada a few years ago. And Chidambaram made a speech asking the Naxals to 'abjure' violence. I mean come on, who the hell even understands such words? The Naxals? The guy just uses garrulous rhetoric with a blase demeanor to get across a very self evident point.
Mariyam Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 My criteria for being a good politician is that a person should be a leader. he should inspire people into acting and doing something. He should also be an able administrator and not be biased. Of the lot, some whom I respect are: Nitish Kumar: Bihar faced the worst floods since independence, and this guy was upto the task. And everyone loves him. Upper castes, lower castes, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs. Note because of the ideology he espouses, but because the guy can be fair. Sharad Pawar: This guy is a leader of men. And has some principles that he stands upto. Unfortunately he is corrupt to the core. If only.... Manishankar Aiyer: A much more refined version of Chidambaram. Aticulate, honest ( or seems to be so) and inspirational. Salman Khurshid: He's got a clean image. He's got a vision. Will he have any freedom to deliver? Other notable mentions: Sachin Pilot, Milind Deora, Mamta Banerjee, Govinda :P
pinkfreud Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 My criteria for being a good politician is that a person should be He asked about our favourite politicians, not what constitutes a good politician or leader :P
Mariyam Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 He asked about our favourite politicians' date=' not what constitutes a good politician or leader :P[/quote'] True that. My bad.
ravishingravi Posted August 24, 2011 Author Posted August 24, 2011 What does that mean? It means that primary reason that lawyers across the world are in prime positions in political system is because they have what can be percieved as the ability to avoid all moral ambiguity and sell the most viable position from political perspective. But Khursheed imo, is not entirely comfortable with that role. I think in the interviews post attack on Ramdev supporters, it was evident. < << See, I can do that too. :D He doesn't even deserve to be on the list IMO. No Mariyam, you troll way too frequently even by politician's standards.:P Have to disagree. My view on Chidamabaram is informed by his stint as finance minster ( his first one ) and the landmark partnership reforms he was able to bring about in Partnership and association of persons taxation laws. Yes, that also qualifies as a politician in my book and I don't consider a support base as a major criteria. As I said, I probably would not include him on current perspective, but for old times sake.
Stuge Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 sadly none :(( All are corrupt to the core ,and have been sucking our country inside out :(
Clarke Posted August 24, 2011 Posted August 24, 2011 no fans of Rahul Baba :king: here. Hows Prithviraj Chavan doing in MH ? He's a BITS/Berkeley alumni which brings some expectations.
Mariyam Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 no fans of Rahul Baba :king: here. Hows Prithviraj Chavan doing in MH ? He's a BITS/Berkeley alumni which brings some expectations. Prithviraj Chavan seems to be slighly better than Ashok Chavan and Vilasrao Deshmukh. The later two commited major faux paus when they were involved in the Adarsh scam and taking RGV to Taj after 26/11 respectively. Prithviraj Chavan is better spoken and has ordered a restructuring some of the provisions of the Maharashtra Agriculture and Fisheries Act. Thats a good move, which will if properly implemented will see benefits trickle down to the weakest sections of the society. He's better spoken than the two earlier CMs. But then again, its just too soon to decide. His handling of the 13/7/2011 bomb blasts leave a lot to be desired.

urbestfriend Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I dont base my liking on how good they speak in Media or how good the debater they are. If a person is too smart and a good debater, but dishonest or not genuinely interested for the betterment of people , I dont consider him/her a good politician. Here is my list: 1) Arun Jaitley: 2) Pranabda: 3) Ashwini Kumar: 4) Ravishankar Prasad: 5) Jaswant Singh 6) Yashwant Sinha 7) Sitaram Yechury 8) Brinda karat 9) Nitish Kumar 10) Narendra Modi
