How many Indian batsmen averaged 50+ in 70s and 80s? I think there is only one SMG. It shows the quality of bowling then and now as well as tells you a few things about the pitches.

Like I said 50 was hallmark of a great batsman in 70s, 80s and 90s. As the cricket entered 2000s, 50 was replaced by 50. 40+ was for class players. Now even tail-enders can average above 30. Earlier best fast bowlers used to average in low 20s and there were many such bowlers. Now most of the bowlers average over 30. Steyn is only bowler who still has low average and good strike rate.

ashwin and ishant showed better technique than our top order which is a shame. leaving the ball, decent defense.

Rohit, Pujara, Umesh,Aswin,Mukund, seem to be our future stars, but then talent alone does not guarantee much , also people who we thought dont have the technique for test's ala Amla are very successful so, Raina , Kohli are very gifted players but with the advent of IPL, AND PROPENSITY TO chase deliveries AS WELL AS WEAKNESS WITH SHORT BALLS, but it is a mind game , if they work on their games they can average 50.

It will be a big disappointment if Rohit doesn't end up with an 50+ average batsmen. There are lots of expectations from him. And Pujara as well. I still believe kohli will become a very good test batsman.

Rohit can easily be one with his technique and talent , but I doubt his drive to succeed at test level so won't bet. Rahane's temperament at intl level is yet to be tested. Pujara is the one I can bet on. Hopefully a good indication will be there on it in the home series against WI.

25 runs more and he will be the next batsman with 1000+ runs and 50+ avg. Great start, now lets see how it goes on the away tours.

Off topic - I don't think merely an average of 50+ indicates the quality of a player. Even if VVS doesn't average 50+, his contributions are worth 50+ of an average.
