Eternal Atma
Sum it up -Has bowled filth -Batted well BUT if he plays in a specialist batsman position can be replicate form? It's different scoring tail ender runs then coming at 200-4 knowing you are a specialist batsman. So those comparing him to our batsmen are a tad silly. Btw not doubting his batting, just saying, it's different batting in the top order. Link to comment
dragonfly
Phew, we have figured out our #8 batsman. Now lets look at #1 - #7! Link to comment

R.D forever
I was really impressed with one particular shot.. the pull he played in Finn's over ... effortless and very VVS:hatsoff: Link to comment
Eternal Atma
thats a fair point. But we will never know how he will perform as a no 6 unless we give him a chance. I would try it for last test as we need 5 bowlers and every bit of help to go for a win. But long term I think it wouldn't be right. Likes of Rohit, Tiwary, Rahane are stronger candidates as they are batting all their lives in the top order and scored big domestically. But Ashwin could be a no6 and should be given a go..I guess he will have to start batting in the top order in domestic too for proper conversion. Link to comment

Need to be given a better chance as a test batsmen and someone to guide him on his bowling . Link to comment
Raghav_12
thats a fair point. But we will never know how he will perform as a no 6 unless we give him a chance. yet, he has to earn his place in the team through bowling only. As somebody pointed out, scoring runs when nobody expected and when runs are not going to make any different, is different from scoring runs as frontline batsmen. This innings is something similar to Mitchell Starc's innings in last Aus-SA test, where he top scored in fourth innings but match was already over for Aus. Link to comment
maniac
Ashwin the batsman has been more impressive than Ashwin the bowler right from his debut.....not talking about this particular series.....was not always sold on his test bowling right from the start despite his wickets but as a batsman...he'll yes...he's good Link to comment

Batsmen like him do well because they dont have any pressure on them to score like a specialist batsman. Once you put him in a specialist position, they start to feel the pressure to contribute on a regular basis and stop doing so well. They also start to concentrate more on their batting in nets and their bowling also gets worse. Link to comment

I said other domestic batsmen have stronger credentials who have batted in the top order for their entire career. But if he keeps scoring then eventually they may have to consider it. Link to comment
vvvslaxman
He plays like a touch batsman. Harbhajan singh has also got 2 centuries. Don't think he was hyped as a batsman because he doesn't have the technique to survive under all conditions. Ashwin does. But i agree he has to work on his bowling. If he and Irfan somehow become half decent you could play 5 bowlers safely. Link to comment

He did not that is the difference. This is not the first time he has played such innings. You dont really see a tailender batting he bats. he can easily become a batting alrounder even at his current bowling and I know he will learn quickly in terms of bowling as he is a thinking cricketer. But he needs to lose some weight too:winky:. Link to comment
Tendulkar_Bhai
We dont have the batting ability to have him come in at number 6 as an alrounder and as mentioned if you have the pressure of knowing you are a batsman its different from going out there at number 8-11 and playing shots. He looks awesome with the bat and plays every shot but can he consistently do this, probably not. So he has to be a bowler coming in at number 8 and currently his bowling is not up to the mark Link to comment
