Number Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 New Delhi: Mandeep Singh has been touted as one of the most talented batsmen among the younger crop and after a string of good performances in IPL, he found his non-selection in the India 'A' squad a bit hard to digest. "I'm disappointed but you can hardly do anything about it. I was hopeful of getting a call-up for the West Indies tour but it happened otherwise. But my job will be to keep up the good work in this IPL and hopefully I will make it to the A team when the next tour is announced," said Mandeep. Mandeep has been a prolific scorer for Punjab having garnered 458 runs in the last Ranji season with an average of 76 plus apart from 359 runs in 12 IPL games in this edition. "I was performing well for the last two years in the domestic circuit and was hopeful of selection but it's not in my hands. I am not reading too much into it and just concentrating on performing well in the ongoing edition," he said. Talking about their away game against table-toppers Delhi Daredevils on May 15 at the Feroze Shah Kotla stadium here, Mandeep conceded that it's a tough match for them given Daredevils' formidable line-up. "It's a kind of tough match for us. They are playing really well and are leading the points table but we are also equally in good touch. If you play to your potential, you can beat the favourites on any given day. We just need to continue with the winning momentum," he said. Spelling out his team's strategy, the Punjab batsman said they need to contain the South African pacer Morne Morkel to brighten their chances of upstaging the hosts. "The strategy would be to prevent Morkel from building pressure during initial stages. We need to play him well. Not to give him much of a chance of taking wickets. It would be good for us if we play him well right from the start and put pressure on him," he said. During his knock of 75 against Deccan, Mandeep was seen playing a lot of pull-shots and the opener admitted that he has purposely prepared himself for the short-pitched deliveries. "Before coming into this tournament, I was aware of the fact that I would be facing a lot of short balls. I have to be good against the short balls. Since international bowlers feel that batsmen from this part of the world are susceptible to short-pitched stuff, I had purposefully worked hard on perfecting the horizontal bat shots." On chances of making the play-offs, he replied,"We must win three of our remaining four matches. We are confident of making the play-off race." http://www.sify.com/sports/i-m-disappointed-at-not-making-it-to-india-a-team-mandeep-singh-news-cricket-mflszaagbad.html He should aim for getting in the teams of A tour but if they select players like Rohit and Rahane who are already in the Indian test squad then it'll take time for him to reach that stage.

I think selectors have done well to select Rohit, Rahane, and Pujara because this is the time they need to get more A tour experience on tough pitches under their belt before they make it to Indian test team. One more year of FC wont harm Mandeep at all. He is still only 20 and still needs to improve a lot.
Sooda Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 ^Yeah A team batting selections are fine- only complaint Id have is if Dhawan plays 4 day matches...
rkt.india Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 ^Yeah A team batting selections are fine- only complaint Id have is if Dhawan plays 4 day matches... Agree. But dont think Dhawan would play FC matches. Rahane and Mukund Should play all the matches and get maximum chances to perform. Selections of Jalaj, RP, Bhuvan are rather baffling for me. At least Jalaj and Bhuvan are no where near India selection. At least, they should give chances to players who are close to Indian selections and are staking claims through FC performances. More of a case of nepotism. Jalaj plays for the same club that Sanjay Jagdale owns and coaches.

I agree that there are some more worthy of selection than BK but his selection is surely not as bad as that of the other 2?
Sooda Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Bhuvaneshar seems ok.. form what little I have read...But not likely to be test class. My ideal squad would have seen Jadeja, Awana and Pankaj in for Jalaj, RPS and BK...even RPS is not that bad a pick as rkt says, if he can come close to recreating some past skill...never know... Do you think there will/should be changes for the limited overs matches- Should not have Rohit and Manoj playing as they are senior players...Rahane too to a lesser extent... This is where younger guys like Mandeep, Suryakumar and Menaria might be able to feature

He is just decent and there are many other as decent as him in domestic cricket.

Yes it is not as bad, but you select team India prospects in A team and I dont see Bhuvan playing for team India near future at least 2 years. He is yet to go a long way before that. Other than his FC performance has not been great either.
sivadarsh2 Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 Virat kohli has emerged into a very reliable player for Indian team.I remember the way he chased down more than 300 runs in 40 overs against Srilanka. He came into the team as a replacement when Yuvraj sing got injured. But kohli fixed his position in indian team in his first chance. Now he has got 3590 runs in ODI's averaging 50.56 Cricket Match Schedule
