Hmmm, we must have watched different games. Ganguly was exquisite on the strokeplay (offside esp. like I wrote before) even against pacers. It was a treat to watch him time the ball and place it in the gaps for a boundary. Top class bloke :) My stance is that SG >>>> Raina in Tests. Raina will struggle to become a decent Test player. SG was not "great" in Tests, but he was decent. Ofcourse, SRT and RD are the very best for Tests, and Laxy. SG is only in the next tier, but this is comparing with Raina in this thread.

I hope Raina's test career does not turn into a saga , similar to what we have seen where they wanted Ajay Jadeja who was a good one day player but failed again and again in test's, what a waste of time.

Does Raina deserve a spot in the Test Squad for Aus tour Raina without a doubt is currently one of the best LOI batsman in the world.He can walk into any team in the ODI and T20 format but I think selecting him for the Aus test series would be a big mistake. He will be a walking wicket on Aus pitches with Johnson,Cummins,Harris,Bollinger etc...Selcting him in the test squad would be blocking a place.He needs to improve his technique to find a place in the test squad again. I have a feeling that he will just walk in to the 15 member squad if not the playing x1 in case of injuries to the original x1 and I don't think he qualifies as an automatic selection in the 15. Thoughts???

Australian tracks would be flat with good bounce. Normal deliveries of Johnson would be above waist and higher for Raina. So no. He shouldn't play there. MSD will enjoy batting there as there won't be much swing like Eng and he plays pull/hook well. Pujara or Kohli should get chance.

I wouldn't say absolute "NO" but he should play more 3 day or 4 day matches to prove his technique..again matches in domestic pitches will not test him, but it is still better than playing T20 circus cricket were hitting 20-30 balls can make you MOM or valuable player. Players like Dravid,VVS,SRT went thro grind of 4days/5days cricket to be what they are in Test arena now...Leave Raina aside i don't even believe any of current crop of players (except Gambhir) is capable of playing geniune test cricket over 5 days against quality opposition.

It is a double edged sword at times...our benchmark for finally giving a player a chance in tests has been his ODI performances which makes sense a given the exposure they get to worldclass bowling but as proven in the case of Yuvraj in the past and Raina now it may not always be true This is where thinking Kohli deserves an automatic test spot given his terrific ODI record to replace Raina or Yuvraj is worrisome as this theory has failed 2 times in the past. but at the same time going by the temparement and strokeplay displayed by Kohli in ODI's gives us a hope maybe we will be 3rd time lucky

Probable 1st XI: 1 Gambo 2 Sehwag 3 SRT 4 Dravid 5 VVS 6 Pujara 7 MS 8 Ishant 9 PK 10 Aaron 11 Ashwin / Harbhajan But that leaves with no part time spinner - discounting Sehwag for his iffy shoulder. So Yuvi could get a look in ahead of Pujara Rahane & Kohli as batting reserves Yadav, Munaf and Ojha in bowling Reserve WK? Where does Raina fit in????
