Sean Bradley Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Does that sound awfully wrong? I don't think so. I'm sure there's not one way of bowling. There are other bowlers who have been successful who have bowler short of a length. He just needs to slightly adjust his length while bowling abroad. He needs to look at the 2nd innings of the Lords Test match and say that's what he wants to bowl as.
Trichromatic Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 See both in Australia and England due to the bounce of wickets the batsmen even guy like Ponting who plonks his feet forward and gropes at the ball were waiting back knowing fully well ball will sail over stumps or miss it.When ever he tried anything else it just did not work.He was bowling faster than any other Aussie bowler. He needs bowl yard fuller to make batsmen play but that means he might lose his movement it is not that easy adjustment.what I feel is he needs to get the ball straighten more at fuller length but that may/may not be possible. If he does that he will be lethal but after 46 tests it is looking more like latter case. But one thing going in his favor is he is still 23 he was thrust into side when he was very young and he has not lost his pace. I guess he will get better returns he bowls some of deliveries full and some even more shorter. instead of bowling everything just ahead of halfway mark
Crookbond Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 He was hitting the Mc. Grath Lenghts on that day, catching the batsmen on the crease, the inswing against the slope to trott was a phenomenol deliverly, but ishant has never been consistent, he needs to keep hitting the just short of good length area swinging both ways, with the inswinging good length delivery as a surprise wicket taker (the one he bowled to ponting & trott). [1] The In swinging delivery is not a surprise but a stock delivery for Ishant Sharma [2] The ball which got Ponting out straightened [3] All Ishant needs to do is put a little bit of variation on the fuller side rather than the shorter side - away from India. The rest will take care of itself.
asterix Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 ^ Exactly.. He bowls the same or worse length, over after over.. Nobody's is preventing him to use a little bit of brain and bowl a few full lenght balls, vary his pace and mix it up.. He'll not get more wickets if he continues to be a dumb bowler...
putrevus Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Bowlers whose natural length is short, definitely struggle to bowl full. Morkel also relies a lot on short pitched stuff, but he mixes it up very well. Ishant and other Indian bowlers rarely bowled bouncers during England tour, same thing happened against WI in India. Most of the time he was just short around halfway of the pitch. On the other hand, notice Morkel's bowling in recently concluded series. He bowled bouncers (around the body, not just the short and wide) a lot. He bowled full deliveries more often than Ishant does. It may be hard to just change your completely, but it's not that hard to mix up your length. Because of his length he will succeed on rare occasions like second innings of Lords, but because he doesn't bowl at uncomfortable lengths (deliveries around shoulder height and full length deliveries), it's easier for batsman to make movement. If there is a bowler in the team who bowls short pitched stuff, then one can expect opposition batting to be careful about the feet movement. But in Ishant's case it was not that difficult. For him KP and other bowlers he was easily able to stay on front foot. Other batsman stayed on backfoot most of the time for Ishant and on front foot without even getting worried about length against bowlers. You won't see anyone doing that against Morkel, because he does bowl few full deliveries if not many. KP's dismissal at Oval was good example of that. How did Morkel do in England he was nothing special with all support he has at the other end. and Morkel has become Left handed Specialist with that full length deliveries which Ishant does not posses. Other than that Morkel will feast on batsmen who are afraid of bounce and will be mediocre against batsmen who play bounce well.Ishant needs to use bouncer more but is reluctant but that is maturing process of a fast bowler.
vvvslaxman Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 wickets will bring confidence what will bring wickets? It is like Rohit sharma saying 10,000 test runs will bring confidence :cantstop:

putrevus Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I guess he will get better returns he bowls some of deliveries full and some even more shorter. instead of bowling everything just ahead of halfway mark see to the the right hander batsmen their lengths are almost similar and Morkel gets more bounce naturally because he uses his shoulder more and Ishant gets less bounce because he relies more on movement. The field placing is also key here Dhoni needs to set field according to bowler rather than asking bowler to bowl to his field.but when his bowlers are leaking runs at both ends without any wickets he has his own problems to think about. Thats why Ishant needs to play some games before he plays any test matches and someone needs to be there to guide him is that possible I have no fricking Idea.
putrevus Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 that Ponting wicket gave him lot of pub but many poeple forget he was not that successful in getting many wickets there. The first time he was looking like he turned the corner into becoming a wicket taker was in WI last tour but it turned out it was more due to crappy WI batting.
Number Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 People think he lacks brain to not bowl fuller while in reality by bowling fuller length will allow batsmen to hit him, as because of his release he is not gonna get much movement neither in the air nor off the pitch. Should work with his coach on that. Should've been dropped to play some domestic games IMO.
MechEng Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 He was hitting Ambrose line and length in this video and bowled plenty of inswingers too. Look at the delivery @1:07, magic ball!!!, inswinger at full length and straightens off the pitch! He hardly bowls inswingers these days. wI2ivgV2z6s
India-KXIP fan Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Take it easy people. Ishant has good genetics much better than a Dinda. Has height (bounce) can bowl 150+ etc, something Dinda can never achieve regardless of how hard he tries. Can also bowl great inswingers. Ishant needs to be given more time he's still young, who knows like Stuart Broad he may also come good eventually.

PaceAttack Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Welcome back Ishu. My favt bowler in Indian team.
vayuu1 Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I think if he loosens his grip rather than holding it tight like Finn has done in third test he will be a bit fuller and that way he can get wickets ,also his arm falls very early compared to when he entered the test arena, use ur left hand to gather extra bounce apart from that he needs to be a bit high arm like he first showed his glimpse on oz tour.
msb1991 Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Does that sound awfully wrong? I don't think so. I'm sure there's not one way of bowling. There are other bowlers who have been successful who have bowler short of a length. He just needs to slightly adjust his length while bowling abroad. He needs to look at the 2nd innings of the Lords Test match and say that's what he wants to bowl as. I think you have to pitch the ball up in Test cricket if you want to have consistent success against high quality players. I think a too short length was the main reason someone like Flintoff underperformed. If we look at two of Morkel's most fruitful spells on the recent tour, wickets have come from pitching the ball up! Barely any from his highly rated short ball. 4/72 against England 0.4 to Strauss, 86.6 mph, huge appeal for lbw! GIven not out by Steve Davis. And we have a review in the first over. Front foot is fine. Blimey this looks very close. Hit on the knee roll, playing across his front pad. It's three reds! He'll be gone. Hitting middle and leg. 0/1 57.2 to Trott, 85.8 mph, here's a wicket! Full and Trott nicks off it was a lazy drive, coming forward without real purpose just outside the off stump and driving loosely, it's a thin nick through to the keeper where the chance was very simple for de Villiers. Second wicket for Morkel 170/2 125.1 to Prior, 85.2 mph, in the corridor, Prior attacks and nicks off! It was perhaps not quite full enough to drive, a good line from Morkel, drawing the batsman out, and there was just a tickle through to the keeper 383/9 125.5 to Anderson, 86.1 mph, leg side strangle and Morkel has ended the resistance! The bumper was a touch wayward but it was more than capable of discombobulating Anderson, who got an atom or two of glove on the ball as he tried to steer it away from his body 4/80 against England 10.4 to Strauss, 83.2 mph, gone! Morkel's got him again! He's fully deserved that wicket after working over both openers. This was a fuller delivery, came back with the angle and goes past Strauss' inside edge to crash into the stumps. Strauss really has no answer to Morkel. The umpire checks for the no-ball but it's fine. What a time to strike for South Africa 29/1 23.2 to Taylor, 90.2 mph, got him! Taylor feeling a little outside the off stump and nicking to first slip where it carries through low and Smith hangs on well coming forward, a good grab. Probing line again and it produces an edge, Taylor's inexperience perhaps showing there as he followed it slightly and got a healthy edge that was well taken 54/4 92.4 to Bairstow, oh bowled him! What a shame for Bairstow, he was aiming towards midwicket and it got past his flick and into middle and off stumps, simply played around it and probably got done under the pressure, saw a straighter ball, tried to work it away and paid the price, patience pays off for South Africa who have bowled really well to him for the last half hour 264/8 107.3 to Finn, 83.4 mph, miscued drive and this loops to point, where Duminy makes sure he doesn't do a Smith, to send Finn on his way for a useful 10 315/10 Ishant did take wickets in West Indies before England tour with the short ball but this was a success that came to West Indies inability to play the short ball. The same plan in England failed in all but one spell.

A good length is called that for a reason. It is the area that a batsman does not know whether to go forward or back. An excellent batsman will go forward but a poorer batsman will go back or not move his feet at all. Aim to bowl short of a length all the time and you are aiming to fail.

If he bowled consistently on a good length, with his pace and bounce, he would get wickets. Do not confuse bowling full with overpitching it. No bowler can get away with consistently overpitching it or bowling half volleys.
