Had a poor tour of NZ, average low 30s for the tour. This is expected, I mean only few young Indian batsmen can score centuries on bouncy overseas pitches. They are in a different league but this guy isn't bad I guess. He will learn hes clearly not at all ready for International cricket yet though.

O really wow. Never knew that. Must've been against top quality international quality fast bowlers Im guessing. Another highly talented player Mandeep Singh has a matchwinning 151 in Australia as well but that was against useless U-19 bowlers. Though he showed his class in NZ. Maybe Chand is good. But he's still not ready after what I saw in NZ tour.

Did Mandeep open in NZ, no, I guess? Opening is a tougher task in those places. Unmukt scored 100s on bowler friendly tracks against some good pacers likes of Cummins, Jamie Overton, Ron Beaton, Sandhu, Reece Topley, Joel Paris, Zia-ul-Haq, and Steketee were as quick as any in International cricket. The 151 Mandeep had scored was when pitches were flat in a high scoring match, look what happened to the same U19 team of Mandeep in seamer friendly conditions in NZ in U19 WC, remember emerging player tournament last year where every Indian batsman had thrashed bowlers on flat tracks. Pitches were not flat this year. Which player emerged in those seamer friendly conditions in both quadrangular series and U19 WC, Unmukt.

He has skill to burn. But too raw right now. Looked sorted out against Lee last night.
Kallis looked sorted out against Morkel. Any batsman will have trouble facing such bowler on such a 2 paced uneven track, key is to survive. Think what can he do on flat tracks.

lol Ok Yeah good point, even though 1 player is very special he cant carry the team : ( Mandeep was top scorer in the match India got knocked out. However players like Menaria (who some compare with Mandeep) were exposed in that match. He's a flat track bully. Chand yet to do well at home. FC average too low to be considered. Struggled at a higher level (A team) away aswell.

He had a 100 in a has against Australian attack comprising Cummins in Quadrangular series to win the seris for India. I am not saying he is a finished article but he has done better than what any other U19 batsman has ever done at U19 level before especially in seamer friendly conditions as an opener he has the most difficult task in such conditions. You cannot compare an opener to a middle order batsman because opener has to deal with the new ball. People were saying he did not play well against Narine, but look at how Tendulkar struggled against Narine in IPL. People are praising Kohli as he plays spinners well, but same people were bashing him seeing him struggling against Afridi in 2009 Champions Trophy. A player is a product of the environment he is in and he can only get better once he starts playing at this level more. I am not degrading Mandeep. Mandeep has a bright future. He should play for India but he too is not a finished product yet. I doubt anyone at such age can be a finished article especially if he is from India.

But in the most recent series he averaged 31 in all games I think. Opening is hard, and Chand did fail. All Im saying is hes not ready yet, other youngsters are ahead and deserve their chance first in Internationals. Mandeep can adapt to opening, especially in LOI's. The highlights for NZ tour showed a weakness with Mandy's foward defence but he did score 193, so the pad before bat in highlights, gap between bat and pad were probably just some rare occurrences. His record overseas and at home is just too good to be kept at domestic level. Highest FC average for an Indian with atleast 15 matches. Chand is yet to do anything of note in Ranji aswell. Fairly average record.

I wont say failed. He did give some solid starts, negotiated new ball which enabled other middle order batsmen to capitalize. If it comes to opening, Unmukt will be ahead of Mandeep because he has opened, while Mandeep has not apart from IPL.

yes..hopefully he will replace one of our openers in test side (rahane)
mj-laughing.gif The same Rahane who has a highest score of 33 in his last 5 FC matches overseas will replace a legend like Sehwag. Pls go. Sehwag is in the worst form of his life (shows cause he's failing at home aswell) yet still scored 2 50s in Australia from 4 Tests. Meanwhile Rahane couldn't get a single 1 in 5 matches, that too at a level much lower than tests. And whats funnier is Rahane is in the form of his life scoring century after century back at home in Ranji (although against trundlers). Shows he's just incapable on bouncy pitches, only a few young Indian batsmen can handle those (well only 1 name comes to mind really).

You can't just put a guy on a bouncy track and say 'perform'. If you've got a talented player, persist with them for a while, let them get used to the conditions, and if they still look clueless then you can talk about replacing them. Guys like Rahane and Chand need to be played in these conditions and only removed if it becomes clear that they're going nowhere.

Chand, Mandeep and Rahane all 3 are good backfoot players(Mandeep specially). Nobody has perfect technique against short balls. Mandeep needs some work on his front foot game. Chand needs more time in domestic cricket. Even in U19 world cup he was wasting starts so he should work on conversion part there. Rahane should start getting more opportunities for India now.

Here's Rahane in his last 5 FC (4 day) games overseas (as if that isn't enough) 2 games in Aus last year his scores were- 3,15,0 3 games in WI this year his scores were- 0,5,18,5,32,2 Gives an average of 8.8 in 9 innings lettuce be realtea, Rahane is going nowhere. You can't compare him to someone cracking matchwinning 151's in Aus, scoring 200 runs in only his 2nd 4 day game overseas. Also highest FC average for an Indian with atleast 15 games... Keep in mind when he played these A team games Rahane was in the form of his life, scoring centuries at home unlike Sehwag who's in the worst form of his life struggling even at home. He still fares better away in his current form at a much higher level (Tests). Rahane simply isnt good enough on these pitches.

Rahane did reasonably well in England, that and his consistent FC record puts him ahead of Mandeep and Chand in the pecking order, deserves more chances, but yeah Chand and Mandeep seem to have better big hitting abilities(important in LOI's)
