BCCI finally wakes up, asks all curators to prepare green tops for Ranji ties

GHAZIABAD: In its bid to make home pitches pacer-friendly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as asked all curators to make green tops for the Ranji Trophy. Arvind Dogra, chief curator of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, said on Saturday that he had been asked by the BCCI to prepare fast wickets for the ongoing Ranji Trophy tie between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. "We were instructed by the board to make green tops and faster wickets. When I saw on Friday morning that the ball was carrying to the wicketkeeper to his shoulder level, I was a relieved man," said Dogra, when asked about why a heavy amount of grass was left of the wicket. "It was good to see so many fast bowlers taking wickets. It looks a good cricketing turf." Importantly, of the 11 wickets that fell Friday in this Group B match, 10 were taken by fast bowlers and one by a spinner. I am not sure preparing ONLY green tops is a good idea. We should have a mixture of pitches including the ones that spin from Day 3. A green top is not necessarily a sporting wicket.

Barring the Wankhede track, no where else has 500 been scored in round 1, so its a good start. We necessarily do not need green tops but the tracks like what we have at Eden for round 1, seam and swing for pacer, bit of turn and bounce for spinners and yet those batsmen who are willing to spend time have scored runs.

Good decision. Green tops are important because the next World Cup is in Aus/NZ, which has similar pitches. It gives our batsmen good practice.

greentops are only good for certain venues like Mohali,Wankhede,in venues like Ahmedabad,Bangalore n Chennai they become pattas after day 1 due to heat,not even helping spinners

LOL, how on earth do u prepare a green top in india? u can only make one if the soil and the weather allows it... any grass on indian soil will dry out in a couple of hours.

Green tops does not help all fast bowlers -- it helps swing bowlers (like in Eng/NZ) more than hit the deck ones. We need to produce hard bouncy tracks too (like in Aus/SAF) to produce batsmen who can play the bounce, not just seam movement.

I am not sure how this is going to pan out. It would be good to have different types of pitches- Some which assist spin, some with very good bounce and some which assist seam movement. In this way the players will be able to practise on all conditions. We should not forget our strength which is spin and go completely towards pace friendly tracks. Then our future generation batsmen may lose the edge of being good players of spin.

Should help the faster bowlers but may affect the quality of spinners that we have, which already seems depleting :doh:

Unless we increase the difference btw Ranji matches its very hard to produce quality fast bowlers regardless of what pitches we have

Read a shocking stat on CI. The Ranji Trophy winning team would have played 47 possible days of cricket in a little over 3 months! Thats insane scheduling. No wonder a domestic coach recently stated that pacers who start the season bowling 135+ end the season bowling at 120 as they are exhausted and there is no time for rest between matches! Just a 3 day gap is also one of the reasons why teams do not go for outright victoriesas they do not want to risk their pacers.

BCCI thinks that the domestic season is from Oct - Jan and the international season is all through the year.
