It is like saying playing Cricket does not make you a great player, obviously not! but scoring 100 international hundreds makes you a legend of the game. In the same way doing the buisness with an Indian lady may not mean much to Viv regarding the Indian culture, but believe you me, bringing a life intp this world who is a proud Indian citizen and who readily admits she has spent many a holiday with Viv, mean he does have strong cultural ties to India, this coupled with his greatness as a player make him the ideal candidate as our coach!

So he will be helpful to understand conditions and also in helping bowlers and batsmen play in overseas conditions as he played in Eng, SA and he is also an all rounder. Indian coach will never work because of politics and some players will suspect the coach is taking sides and there wont be unity.

Azzuradin- Head Coach Kapil Dev - Senior coach Ganguly - junior coach Dravid - batting Laxman - test match batting coach Kumble - leg spin bowling coach Tendulkar - team God Srinath - fast bowling :hysterical: No WK coach ? maybe dhoni doesn't need one.. and no fielding coach either? how about coach for running between the wicket?:):)

Dhoni_fan Posted April 20, 2013 Author Posted April 20, 2013 Delhi Daredevils despite having some good players have not found the winning formula, they have now called on Sir Viv to work with them in an advisory role. DD have seen that he is the man to get them out of a crisis. With his cultural connections to our country and track record as a proven champion it is time that the BCCi make him the coach. Kudos to Delhi for making this sensible and professional decision.
mastana Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 On NDTV yesterday Gavaskar said that when Fletcher's contract is over we need a new coach who is an Indian and has a lot of experience as a player and has had a very sucessful career so that they command the respect of the dressing room. While I agree with Sunny that a foreign coach is not ideal (Kirsten being an expection and largely because he knew a lot of our senior players well and had to do a decent job in order to ultmiately reach his goal of coaching South Africa as he is now) I do feel that there is one candidate that is being overlooked all too quickly, that is the legendary sir Viv Richards, he led the West Indies to some of their greatest moments and bowlers all around the world fear him, even now batsman from Kp to Gilly to Shiv have spoken of him as an inspiration! A key for us as well is that unlike Kirsten who understandably was finding coaching in India tough because he was away from his family for so long, Viv will not have that problem as he has a very strong connection to India, having impregnated an Indian lady many years ago his daguther Masaba still resided in India. The circumstances plus the connection to our great country, make Viv the perfect man to take our team forward and from this transitional period back to the top of the tree in 2013!! Going by your logic these two are perfect candidates :-

Moody is an excellent candidate specially considering he has worked with a SC (albeit 3rd rate) team and is a good manager.
Muloghonto Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 I don;t knwo why people get drifted away by big names here. Kapil Dev is a prime example of a great player and a failure of a coach. Coaching is a job, so only those who have some specific experiences should be handed over the responibility. Also, one more thing that needs to be looked at is how would that coach work with the captain. Kirsten was a hands-on coach whilst Dhoni is more of a hands-off captain and their combo worked well together. Problem now is that both are fairly uninvolved and that is leading us nowhere. +1 I never quite understood the fascination with ATG players turned coaches. Being a great player does not make you a great communicator, methodical analyst or ego-manager that is the job of a coach. If you look hard, there is actually quite a distinct trend: ATG players by and large tend to be extremely poor coaches. Sobers was a terrible coach according to the Windians, so was Viv. Not just in cricket, take hockey for example: Gretsky was a terrible coach and Mike Bossy didnt even make it out of juniors as a coach. Why ? well mostly because ATG players have gotten there due to something innate, be it mental or physical or both. A few years ago i was out with a former NHL player who thought Gretsky's idea of coaching was ' go behind the net, if the defenceman gets in your way, you deke past him, then dish out a perfect pass to the open guy'. His response was 'yes. While i am at it, i might as well do a loopedeloo spinorama as well.' Point is, ATGs dont necessarily have what it takes to relate to the common player. And that is why if you look closely, you will find that ATG coaches, in virtually every sport, have usually been extremely mediocre former players- players who've had to work hard and learn everything in cricket, to whom nothing came naturally and as such, understand how to impart their learned skills much better.
