Ganguly followed by Dhoni. It would have been Dhoni but I think Dhoni has lost the privilege to be labelled the best test captain after a series of whitewashes and home losses. Dravid was heading towards becoming a great captain but his captaincy seems to have been cut short prematurely due to non cricketing reasons, as Dravid came under the tactful political manoeuvres of the BCCI. Dravid won a test series in England after 20 years but he seems to be better remembered as the loser of knock out matches in a world cup - the matches were lost due to notorious top order collapses. Dravid himself played a fighting knock against SL but could do nothing about others who collapsed in a heap.

Dhoni has a weird record as a captain. He reached absolute peak (world cup wins) also registered lot of "first" wins then hit absolute rock bottom.

For my money Shastri would have been a great captain. A shrewd onfield tactician. But his selfish batting dug his own grave. Srikkanth was great in uniting the team. But his own form took a nosedive. Sunny was not bad. Kapil dev performed brilliantly when he captained the side. Nepotism, politics were always there.

I think that was only time Dhoni ever did something tactically, I have not seen anything creative from Dhoni since then.
