I think Sehwag in form could be helpful in SA conditions because he is a batsman who could attack and dent the new ball and put some pressure on their bowlers. Rather than just playing defense at both ends and getting out eventually, its better to have an opener who could score runs and make bowlers lose their rhythm and line and length. But Sehwag in current form wont do much there.

Sehwag has underperformed. There is no point saying phalana was selected and dhimkaana was not. However from my own perspective I would back him to come back for 2-3 more years.

I honestly believe that if he stops clowning around and starts taking his career more seriously, then maybe he can have a renaissance and play atleast 3 more years.

Sehwag was the 2nd highest run scorer in that test match in durban behind only laxman. Quickfire 20s and 30s could be very usefully when the par score is around 200.

Dude averages 14 and 24 on his last two tours to South Africa but let's just pick the one game in which he did half decently :facepalm: Fact is Sehwag has been a miserable failure on every tour outside the subcontinent since an excellent series in Australia 5 years ago. Sure, any number of excuses can be made for him by his fans but he's a waste of space away from Asia. Of course, these days he can't even score consistently on Asian pitches but that's a different matter.

Sehwag is not like a pinch hitter. There is clearly a method to his madness. When he was at his best, he had superb hand eye co-ordination which helped him score runs at high strike rate when other batsmen were struggling to put bat on ball. His average of 50 in tests speaks for itself.

Its also has to be said that their isn't much depth at the opening spot. Murali vijay, gautam Gambhir, rahane (plays at number 3 in domestic cricket) shikar dhawan (averages 45 in domestic cricket I don't think he's done much last ranji season either.) Dhawan and Rahane could be successful though but they should have been tested earlier, not two test matches into a series right before a big test series in south africa. Even Pujara took 3 test matches to get going. Kohli took a while as well and still hasn't fully adapted. Now theirs huge pressure on them to make their mark and if they don't sehwag or gambhir can come back in again.
