Irfan Pathan a one trick pony

After seeing him being treated with disdain in the first practice game and his bowling in IPL I wondered why is he not effective as a left armer as he should be and why hasn't he learnt his lessons after playing for sooo many years, well he had to deal with injuries, being shunted around , being touted as an all rounder , he is too valuable for team India to be wasted but he is clearly not test class and even a very good opening ODI bowler and is limited at when he can bowl in an innings. He is strong mentally and physically, disciplined and hardworking, after making a debut at a young age and trying to adjust and make too many changes initially he has become rigid in thought process and doesn't want to look at what he needs to do. A left hander has to bowl the ball which uses the angle against the right handed batsmen which he never does, his bowling is very one dimensional, bowling close to the stumps and getting the ball to pitch within the stumps and bring it in if it moves , he doesn't use the crease or bowl one slightly wide of the crease and use more wrist to get bounce and pace even if he cant take the ball out the ball going to the slips at a slightly shorter length and using that as a variation along with the effort short ball and a Yorker is what he needs to learn to bowl to be a test class bowler also needs to bowl withing 133 to 142 k. Wassem was quite clealy a freak bowler who used to vary pace, angles and was a master at bowling Yorkers as well as short and good lengths, Johnson has a similar issue where he is either bowling like a world class bowler or looking like a mediocre on and the difference is when he brings the ball in, Zaheer was very good at using the angles and getting the right armed batsmen to edge one to the slips using the ball which goes with the angle and got good bounce exactly the ball Irfan needs to have in his armoury.

His release is also poor,lack of usage of front arm, there is no real pivot to generate pace. There are so many things that hamper him as a bowler. He should be treated as an all rounder. Purely as a bowler or batsman he is falling short.

Purely as a bowler or batsman he is falling short.[/quote'] I agree fully but also am perplexed why a talented and hardworking and smart player cannot work his way to getting the skills and chinks out of his bowling, with Zaheer on his way out this can be a golden opportunity for him but he is not convincing as a test or even a good ODI bowler. A good coach could work wonders with him if he is open to changes, with the current cricket calendar if he is fit and picks up his bowling and it is more mental then physical we can have a very good all round option.

His confidence is non-existent at the moment.....has been for a while.....

He made a decent comeback last year picking up 19 wickets in 12 matches@29 along with some useful contributions with the bat. Had a 5-er in his last match. Also has a very good record in England, 10 matches , 16 wickets@24. On flat wickets, may look ineffective, but with some spice in the wicket, he will still get you wickets with the new ball. Too early to write him off. And no one trick ponies do not pick 250+ international wickets.

Agree he did make a decent comeback but has regressed since then, he has ambitions of leading the Indian attack but if he is honest to himself he should know he is far away from being a decent test or odi bowler, he is too one dimensional at this moment and having played cricket for soo long hasn't progressed well enough

Are you using IPL to gauge him? Irfan is very much a ONE trick pony - He strikes with the new ball in ODIs but it's a good trick and can be very very useful.

Irfan after his latest comeback was bowling better with better action and getting more pace, nip and bounce, now he seems to have lost it also.

Trundler Life span is 1-5 years.So we should try new set of medium pacers like BK,Mohit Sharma...
