Personally speaking the Win loss ratio does not mean anything. The key criteria for success should be (A) have you won any major cups invlong all major test playing nations? (B) have you had a good run in the WC's especially As saneindian said, we have not won a major ODI tournament outside asia since 1985 (australia). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Championship_of_Cricket We have come close in 2000 (finals champions trophy) 2003 (cricket world cup finals). But not won anything as such. Winning this tournament will represent a victory in ODIs outside the sub after nearly 28 years.
Read the above posts carefully. CB series 2008. Finals in 2003 World Cup. World T20 2007. Natwest trophy win in England. ODI series wins in England, West Indies, New Zealand. By the way, stats are important because it shows how consistent a team is.

Read my post carefully. CB series involving 3 teams is not a major tournament as are those other series. They are good victories to have. But not a benchmark for me. WC2007 is a T20 tournament. We are talking ODIs. Major tournament in ODIs= any competition involving all the top test playing nations in ODIs. India's last win in such tournaments outside asia is in 1985. A factually correct statement.

WI ODI series. I think we performed admirably in SA too - closest we've been in last 21 years or so.
Wouldn't call WI series win a great win but those were rare feats as in we had never won there earlier. Corrected it in 2009 and then won again in 2011. Ditto with the ODI series win in NZ (our first in history), historical yes, but not really a great win IMO.

You could say the same thing about Australia or South Africa also. When has Australia won anything "important" in sub continent after 1996 ? When has SA won any "important" tournament? But they are considered the best ODI sides because of their consistency.

that win loss ratio is overrated, Indians piled up most of the wins on home cooking. They have come short in major tournaments. They even lost to fricking Bangladesh in Asia cup.

So what? Win is a win. Conditions in Asia cup were as good as India. We had beaten SL and Pak comfortably in the same Asia cup. It does not mean BD is better than SL and Pak. You can always have upsets here and there. All these ODIs just provide a platform to bigger tournaments.

Its also funny how some people think foreign conditions mean automatically tough. Conditions in SA, Eng, Aus are very good for batting for ODIs at least. I would say they are even better than India where some pitches become slow and tough for playing shots.

Just to quote a figure , in these 5 years our batting averages 29 per wicket in these 3 countries, in India the same average jumps to 39! http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;filter=advanced;groupby=team;host=1;host=2;host=3;orderby=runs;spanmax1=18+Jun+2013;spanmin1=18+Jun+2008;spanval1=span;team=6;template=results;type=batting http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;filter=advanced;groupby=team;host=6;orderby=runs;spanmax1=18+Jun+2013;spanmin1=18+Jun+2008;spanval1=span;team=6;template=results;type=batting

Win is win as a stat, but it does not reflect true greatness of the team. For a team to be reckoned best in the world it needs to perform everywhere. Of the 48 losses only 12 have come at home and 36 have come in away and neutral venues. It still shows how much this team is dependent on friendly conditions where their batsmen can cover up for their bowling deficiencies. Unless they change that true greatness will elude them.

I want to see what are the list of 'major' tournaments people are alluding to here. I won't be surprised it that lists contains only world tournaments. I doubt any team other than the great teams of WI and Australia can have a stake to win such tournaments.

In home conditions, home team always has an advantage because they know how the wicket plays and they are used to playing there and have the crowd support etc. If you think every team does equally well in away conditions like it does at home, then you are crazy.

As for calling others crazy, please do look at what you are writing in one post before doing a complete somersault in the next one.

Read what I wrote again. SA, Eng, Aus conditions are good for batting for ODIs as we saw in recent series between SA Vs Pak, Aus Vs West Indies and in this Champions trophy. We didnt see any real swing, seam movement or particularly difficult conditions for batsmen. But home teams which plays in those conditions generally are more knowledgeable about what the team composition should be, how batsmen should bat at the start, what lengths bowlers should bowl, how the pitch might play, how to bowl with the old ball, etc. because they are used to playing there. They have a distinctive advantage over touring teams. No team barring West Indies of 80s and Aussie teams of 2000s can do as well in overseas conditions as they can at home. That's what I meant to say.

zh58.jpg Stats excluding minnows and Bangladesh. Some teams have inflated records because of playing with weak teams.
Still Won 55 and Lost 51
