First memories of cricket

I also have specific memory of NOT eating Dal Makhani and Rice after lanka pwned us in 96 I also remember clearly that after India lost to Aus at home, I went to the nearby desi restaurant where all Indians were almost in tears while Aussies for some reason thought that we didnt know, so we were reminded a few times. basically after that series I stopped being emotional for cricket. The BCCI and players let us down in that series and since then I am not as passionate as I used to be.

my first memories of cricket was saf tour of nzl(97 maybe),i was 5-6 years old ..saf used to play in that red jersey in odis.i distinctly remember klusner whacking the kiwi bowlers apart in an odi maybe napier/auckland..saf were #1 then i think and kallis too was at the top of the rankings

South Africa wore that Red/Green Jersey for the first ever time. It was a great series. One of the best matches in that tournament was Saf vs NZ where Dion Nash's six was given four and NZ loses by 1 run.

India Australia game in 92 WC. So close, yet so far. Jadeja Sr. took a fab catch, the rain rule rubbed us the wrong way. Srinath tries to connect off the last delivery, a sitter dropped on the boundary followed by a very good throw and we lose by one run.

I remember my cousins came to my home with a radio listening to commentary because of powercut, as soon as the power came everybody started watching TV and i joined them out of curiosity as to why so many people like this. I was just 7 yrs old then. :--D From that time i became fully involved in cricket.

Boy, I am the old fogey here, but I have to most experience out of you all. First memory of cricket was listening to Gavaskar getting out in the first over off Willis in the Calcutta test against England in Jan 1977. I was too young to remember it clearly, but I distinctly remember listening to him getting out on the radio and crying my eyes out. Same!! I remember I used to hate seeing cricket on tv and wud close the tv down if there was any cricket on:--D. My dad who I think was an average cricket fan but desperately wanted to see that match as it was Indo-pak QF and therefore explained me all the rules during that match so I could let him watch that match on tv:haha:. I remember how I got so serious in that match(my first match) that I went to madir in our house during Pakistani innings n said to god that 'Bhagwan, yeh match jeeta do, gyaaraah rupeyees ka prashad chadhaunga' :cantstop: .... Eventually we won however I didn't give that prasaad... Now I loved that match so much that I myself saw next Indo-srilanka match without my dad as he had some office work n said the same thing to Bhagwan ki yeh match jeeta do, gyarah rupeeka prashad chadhaunga...however India lost and being a kid, I took the blame for not fulfilling my earlier promise and went to temple n chadhofied 11 rupees ... Funny thing is after that Indo-Pak match, my dad never saw a single cricket match and I never missed a single cricket match... As a matter of fact, he hated cricket after that as I didn't focus on my studies us of cricket. :((

danda, I will take your posts anyday over mind-boggling Einsteinesque analysis courtesy Youtube videos. Awesome series that. I was born that year but I had Sportsworld or Sportsweek issues of that particular series. I believe Gavaskar got married just before the series because one picture caption mentioned his flashing wedding chain while he was playing a drive. [For the curious, dont ask me about this - the picture captioned mentioned that....I dont know in what cultures the groom gets a wedding chain) There were a ton of Ranji scorecards from that era featuring Hari Gidwani, Mahesh Sampath, Ramnath Parkar etc. PS: Googled and found out Gavaskar got married in 1973. But yeah, the picture caption did mention wedding chain.

I was born that year but I had Sportsworld or Sportsweek issues of that particular series. I may have heard or listened to cricket between 1975 - 1976, but I was way too young to remember. I distinctly remember the Eng-Ind series of 1976 - 77. Tony Greig was the captain and India got walloped. Then I remember in late 1977 India went to Aus to play the B team (Packer circus was going on) and Doordarshan would show highlights of the matches 2 - 3 days later. Also remember my father taking me to Eden Gardens in 1978 - 79 to watch many matches. Gavaskar was the reason I got interested in cricket. He was my idol until he retired and I stopped watching cricket for almost a decade.

THIS GOES A LONG WAY ... We got a B&W Canon TV in 1983 ..( THose days having a TV was becoming a status symbol and a mtter of prestige /neighbour's envy in the town) . Saw India vs. Pak test match in 1983 live from Pakistan on TV with Zaheer Abbas being difficult for our bowlers to dismiss ....surprisingly have no memory of India winning 1983 world cup ..may be I was just gettng into senses then .. First moment of joy in ODI which I could remember was Kirti AZad ( current BJP MP) winning the Delhi ODI at JLN stadium walloping the Pak bowlers in an almost.. First Really good moment when I felt proud to be an Indian playing cricket was India winning Benson& Hedges World Championship of Cricket in 1985 with Ravi Shastri riding the Audi as Man of the Series :two_thumbs_up:

My very faint memories are from the 1992 WC in Australia. Remember celebrating India's victory over Pakistan.. But my first real memory of Cricket and Sachin are from India's tour of NZ, where Sachin smoked NZ in one of the matches. Apart from that, I remember Jimmy Paddams phase, Sachin flicking West Indian fast bowlers in the air on the leg side majestically, I think the bowlers were Cummins (!?), Walsh and Ambrose. What a sight that was..
