This is my list of the 12 best innings against great pace bowling in test cricket in order of merit. 1.Graham Gooch's 154 out of 251 at Leeds in 1991 v West Indies A classic where he brilliantly combated the fiery West Indian bowling attack like fighting a war of attrition.Brilliant adaptation in the most testing conditions. 2.Roy Frederick's 169 at Perth in 1975-76 Counter attacked Lillee and Thomson like a military batallion launching a brutal attack on an enemy camp.Made the bowlers look like cattle. 3.Stan Mcabe's 232 at Nottingham in 1938 Mastered the bodyline attackled by Haold Larwood like a great military commander resisting an invincible enemy.Bradman thought this was the knock of a lifetime and the best innings he ever saw. 4.Kim Hughes 100 not out v West Indies in 1981-82 at Melbourne Displayed remarkable tenacity and skill against a fiery Caribbean attack spearheaded by Holding.Superbly fended the rising deliveries and attacked the bad balls.Above all he won the match scoring more than 50% of his team's score. 5.Graham Gooch's 153 at Kingston in 1953 Brilliantly counter-attacked Roberts,Croft,Holding and Garner with audacious power on the quickest of tracks.Executed a great variety of strokes. 6.Rohan Kanhai's 115 at Perth against Australia for Rest of the World On the fastest of Perth tracks superbly dominated Dennis Lille with a series of brilliant,drives,cuts and hook shots.One of the most creative exhibitions of batting ever. 7.Gundappa Vishwanath's 97 not out v West Indies at Madras Batting of a connosier.Exhibited the skill of a technician combined with the artistry and imagination of an artist.Bissected the most impregnable gaps in the field like weaver cutting thread and even dispatched the bad ball to the boundary.One of test cricket's outstanding counter-attacks. 8.Viv Richard's 170 for Rest of the World against Australia in 1977-78 Viv treated great paceman like a spinner simply giving the likes of Lillee a battering. 9.Gary Sobers 254 in 1972 for Rest of the World against Australia at Melbourne. One of batting greatest exhibitions which expressed the domination of an invincible emperor.The closest to a perfect innings. 10.Mohinder Amarnath's 80 and 91 at Barbados in 1983 v.West Indies resembled the nerves of a great soldier resisting a invincible enemy in alien conditions.Mastered the great Carribean quartet with a series of great drives and hook shots. 11.Brian Lara's 277 at Sydney in 1992-1993 A great exhibition of strokeplay on a difficult wicket.Played almost every shot in the book with great flair and dominated the bowling completely. 12.Sachin Tendulkar's unbeaten century in South Africa in the 1st test in 2010-2011 Handled Dale Steyn in the most difficult conditions like a doctor treating an incurable patient.

1. Widely considered greatest against fast bowling. 5. I know that Gooch had a pretty long career, but never would have guessed that he was already playing in 1953. 11. Don't think if Australian pace attack was really fast at that time. 12. Great innings.
