What's regressive in that ad?
The woman is the boss but still has to go home to cook an elaborate meal .Why the double standards?Show some employed help make dinner.Basically...for a woman...they have to do well everywhere to keep family balance.

That is the message...a good wife works her backside at work and then comes home to cook an elaborate meal for family.(a sad reality for most working women)...... Men will appreciate it better if they go home tired from work and then cook a full meal .... Most women 's work doesn't end there...clean the kitchen, kids home work ,prepare them for bed...prepare for next day....wake up and enter the kitchen.....breakfast,lunch...... and it goes on.The ad just encourages the stereotype.

In this day of working couples, I can imagine these chores being performed by both men and women.

In this day of working couples' date=' I can imagine these chores being performed by both men and women.[/quote'] You seriously think that happens in most of India....? Nah most times...the guy will fall back on the joint family to keep him comfortable. Stay with parents or call them to live. He won't have to/be allowed to ...while the dil ends up with having to deal with the stuff that comes with all that. In most of cases...that dream is atleast 10 -20 years away.

Honestly that is changing rapidly. About 7 out of 10 working couples I know on an average stay in small families. And they take turns in baby sitting and attending to home chores. Of course, when it omes to matters of home, the female generally has more responsibilities, but that's more like "leadership". The male is usually the higher earning partner and hence spends on an avg more % time at office than at home. Then again, that's what marriage is about isn't it? It isn't a tool to "equalise" people, but to make people "compliment" each other in my opinion. It'd be rather extremely boring if both partners were exactly same in a union wouldn't it be? We aren'tperfect and we wouldn't be. So perfect matchs are always a myth.

It is not about the perfect match...it is about the stereotyping. The ad just shows that the woman can attain any level professionally but her duties at home remains the same. Where is the option ?And just doing a few chores doesn't equal sharing of duties...it is the over all responsibility to be good at both fields that is not fair.A woman can't afford to screw up any where. As for the earning bit...this inequality stay s even when both are earning. Besides most women do drop out or lag behind because of the added womanly functions like pregnancy, childbirth and early child care. Things are not the same but at least if the men acknowledge that it is very tough being a full time working woman...if may feel better. As for me...I think it is stupid of these women to do all.Why Try to be super human? If you work the same as your husband...come home ,put your feet up next to him and ask your paid help to do the job.....make life fair. Or if you have to do it all at home...stay at home and let your husband get the pay check. This is my personal opinion.Other women may beg to differ.

I have a slightly different opinion. I think women need to take more responsibilities at home simply because men aren't upto it. Men have a different set of skill sets and women have different skill sets. I learnt this mostly post my marriage, I wanted to honestly help her out at home, but after some time we realized it wouldn't just work. She is working as well, but she chose a job that allows her to spend more time at home than at office. It's not about "restricting" her to the kitchen and house, but because realistically out of the two of us, only she was good enough to manage both, I admit. And I think housekeeping and homemaking is a far tougher challenge than office duties. And people who manage both, they are goddesses in my opinion. Women are without doubt more smarter than men. Men are more focussed than women, but tend to fail badly at managing multiple things, which homemaking requires. Women are just too good.

I don't think it should be about gender...it should be about who does what best. My husband would make a brilliant house husband because he does most house work better than me .His job doesn't allow him to do so on a regular basis.Nor does he have the option of changing jobs .So I choose to stay at home and manage home.I have no problems with that. Problem is when both go out and work the same hrs ....but the guys job id over at the office and the woman's second job(at home) starts once she leaves.(This is where the ad and the stereotyping comes in) Many men are good with house work and many women are not.But still if both have similar jobs...it is mostly women who end up doing the lion's share of work at home. You appreciate the role of women who do both jobs ...but many don't . The problem is with people who think it is not the man's job to do any work at home irrespective of how much the wife is working outside.

Not really...most time they don't have any other option. If they want a professional life...they have to be good at it ...and not being good at home is not an option because the price is too big to pay.

Saptapadi Jewelers, a small time Mumbai based group, have the following ad in the print media and also on hoardings and buses. A photo of a lady in bridal finery and the caption. " I didn't get to choose my husband, at least I chose my jewelry" In very poor taste, me thinks. What is the point that the ad is trying to convey? Subservience? Choice of jewelery can off set having no say in choosing a life partner?
I think it is a dig at the arranged marriage system. Maybe they should do one with a man going "My punditji chose my wife, at least I can choose the ring she gives me."

Poor self loathing advert if the jewellery is of Indian origin if not its racist. impact should be any self respecting woman should not buy jewels in that place also ones who have chosen their life partners themselves. Reeks of pathetic advert design, from rookies who have just read Philip Khotler.

If only they had turned it the other way around "I chose my own husband, why shouldn't I choose my own jewellery too" , would have been so much better and seemed progressive

I didn't think of it that way. Jewelry adverts in India are always women-centric though. Even the few times that a man may actually need to buy some jewelry, he is accompanied and 'helped' by his wife/female friend etc. The decision maker in these purchases always tends to be the female. Hence its her opinion that the advert has to influence.

Progressive it would be. But that wouldn't be an advert for the brand. It would sound more like a tagline from a GoI " Daughters are the wealth of the nation" campaign.

There has been huge debates on social media with both sides One side is that the ad is a positive one about a woman being a boss and able to surprise her husband and spread love On the flip side people are saying that the woman still has to perform a cooking role to justify herself Personally I go with the first view, I did not understand what was regressive about the ad
Totally agree with yum... It is a regressive ad...just like that new ad which shows the woman boss husband go home and make an elaborate dinner for her subordinate husband. This ad got a lot of publicity...may be the jeweler was also looking for some negative publicity. Or considering that bridal jewelery itself is not such a progressive buy....they actually mean it. It is also a sad reality for many women and men.We do have rather regressive traditions and too much power and importance given to 'elders'.
The flared noistril lady did it out of love, its a bit dumb the ad they should have made the skype id name 'Priya' instead of making it obvious 'wife'
