vvvslaxman Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Gambhir is first preference of every person who wants one senior in the team. He has been our best bat and saved and won us games and done better when most of the big 3 - Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman failed. This is only if Gambhir isn't picked if he fails to score something big in coming Ranji games. Still will echo the same thing. Jaffer is better bat than most Ranji players today. He is definitely better than Dinesh Karthik who might have outscored him back in England 6 years ago. Playing big knocks and staying on the wicket for long time is what is required and I believe him and Pujara are probably the best in India right now in that department along with Gambhir. IN helpful conditions he can't even survive let alone stay because of his technique. You might even want to try Rahane as an opener.
saneindian Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Lose with a young team so that they learn something for the future. Anyone who watched him bat at Lahli in the 1st Ranji match vs Haryana would know he still has those old problem of being loose on the drive and playing away from the body. Joginder Sharma with his 115-120 kph mild outswingers had him in all problems, not sure how he would face Steyn/Philander. Dhawan and Vijay deserve to play both the tests in SA. Gambhir / DK for the 3rd opener but no Jaffer please.
Laaloo Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Vijay deserves a bucket full of sambhar back home and that's about it. Can't have a walking wicket like him in SA especially with Dhawan unproven at the other end.
Cricketics Posted November 11, 2013 Author Posted November 11, 2013 Lose with a young team so that they learn something for the future. Shouldn't go with that mindset that we are going to lose. Yes, odds are against us, but we can still make it happen. Also if we win or lose, the team without exclusion or inclusion of Jaffer, Gambhir, would still be considered as a young team since majority of the players would be young. A senior batsman is going to just benefit us. Also would make our youngsters more stiff and strong about their batting and they won't have that relaxed approach that they can continue to play casually for long, since there is someone waiting to replace them if they become too docile. I am not saying pick them in the first game, put them in the squad just like we have one extra wicket keeper always for over seas tour. It will benefit us.
mastana Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Hell no. This is not PCB Cricketics sahab. Our selectors dropped sehwag, gauti and zak for youngsters and you expect them to bring back Jaffer? Why not Gauti then?
vvvslaxman Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Let us hope it doesn't come to a situation where we need replacements. It is only a two test series. Most likely whoever opens in the first test will open in the 2nd test as well.

Can't have a walking wicket like him in SA especially with Dhawan unproven at the other end. One thing is for sure, Vijay and Dhawan have the most pressure to deal with. More than Kohli, Pujara and Rohit. Things keep getting tougher on those tracks. You see off the first 12 overs and waitinf for 2nd change to happen, and you have another wicket taking bowler who is replacign either bowler who would have enough swing and pace to get the wicket. Caught behind dismissals are the most common dismissals over there for any touring side. I don't expect it to change. Regarding Murali Vijay, everyone has more eyes on him this time. If he performs well here, he surely would have cemented his place for long time, if not, o well, people won't even want to see him for NZ tour.

Not sure how will it affect the playing 11 tbh. If he is not going to play why not take guys like Vijay Zol. So that he can learn from the seniors. Anyways i can't see this happening.

Noticing some low scoring games in Ranji for a change, so it's good if he can be among runs over there in those grounds.
G_B_ Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 @sane problem is there is too much young there. Didnt you moan in another thread how inexperienced the side was? Lets be frank, Vijay is 30 years old. Gambhir is 30 years old. So your not talking about spring chickens. So who are the young options who are young (say 27 and below) and averaging more than 45 with the bat and regular openers and have played more than 25 ranji games. So that means experience in domestics, ability via average and specialise in that position and an age profile to fit team India. Mukund I dont think i have left out anybody else?
CG Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Take d.k and u get backup keeper + backup opening batsman.
Number Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Him and Rajat Bhatia are must in the Indian squad.
diga Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Vijay is 30 years old. Gambhir is 30 years old. So your not talking about spring chickens. Did not realise that at all..He is not exactly an athletic fielder Think Gambhir needs a second chance
The Realist Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Gambhir only deserves a call-up if he scores runs and improves serious technical weaknesses. No test century for nearly 4 years, did nothing for Essex and had done equally little on the domestic scene. Cannot have another Ishant Sharma passenger figure in the batting.
youngindia Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 one of the most stupidest and ignorant threads ever.
adi B Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 no oldies please!! rather give mooli a chance than jaffer dhawan mooli chepu nahane kohli nohit dhoni ashwin bhuvi shami umesh this should be the lines up,if mooli fails we can play other youngsters or even gambo
G_B_ Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 why are we ignoring Mukund anyways? He is the better opener from TN. Thought he was unfairly dumped.
