maniac Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Not a big fan of Michael Clarke but I think Dhobi could learn a thing or 2 from him. Firstly Clarke is not without his flaws,he is boneheaded in his own ways at times with his "out of box" thinking but the difference here is Clarke is always looking to give himself a chance at winning. Yes his over-agressiveness not only comes across as stupid but reflects his own alleged persona of being full of himself anyways that is just a personal judgement and I will leave it at that. Yet I really like what he has done with leading this Australian team....He was outplayed in India completely but even in England despite the 3-0 result,Aussies had a shot and they played some damn good aggressive cricket. I really think he was really good and infact apart from India which I follow by default,he has made Aussies a must watch team.Apart from 1-2 exciting talents he is the sole reason that Aussies are an exciting team to watch even when they play against Srilanka or Pakistan in U.A.E later this year. I really am impressed and I hope Dhoni takes a leaf out of his book.....I think Clarke>Ponting and if he wins in S.A and Pak in U.A.E,I might as well say as good as Steve Waugh because he clealry has a weaker side than Waugh.
maniac Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 captaincy is extremely overrated on ICF. While I partly agree with your statement,As we have seen with our very own team,a small idiotic move can handover the momentum to the opposition. and I think Clarke was really good the way he used his resources.
Number Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Has always impressed me, right from SL series. Not the sharpest of brains but always keeps coming with new plans than just sitting back going through the motions. In Brisbane test England 1st innings, when he saw Trott was playing for the lunch and Johnson was troubling him in the over that was supposed to be 2nd last before lunch, he tried to squeeze in one more over from Johnson before lunch and Trott fell in that. Later in the same innings Carberry was looking solid, he asked Johnson to bowl around the wicket short of the length with a leg gully. That changed the game or probably the whole Ashes. Such captains make viewing interesting. :two_thumbs_up:
don_corleone840 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 He is a good player but he is nothing special as captain
jf1gp_1 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 give me mitchell johnson in that kind of form and even ill look a great captain.
Vijy Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Time to trot out the tired old cliche: A captain is only as good as his team. There have been captains who extracted much more out of their teams than what one thought was possible, but there's still a limit to what they can achieve. Oz have always batted well at home - witness Warner's diff in avgs home and away, and their bowling roared into form. Hence, the good captaincy by Clarke was backed up by sterling performances from many players. Having said all that, I do feel that Clarke is one of the better captains around. Cook is one of the worst, along with Dhobi in Tests.
SLICKR392 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 A captain 'is' usually as good as his team but Dhoni hasn't got the brains to assemble a good playing XI to start with. Cook does, but he is a pathethic & gut-less leader and Sammy probably overtakes these two. Smith was rubbish against us but I still rate him over Clarke and Misbah is a pretty good one, too.
GoldenSun Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 He is someone I've begun to look up to in terms of leadership. Love the bloke :).
Muloghonto Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 captaincy is extremely overrated on ICF. If you followed the recent Ashes drubbing, you would realize that there is a lot more to captaincy than just rotating through your bowlers. Clarke is a bloody good captain. Probably more effective than Steve Waugh IMO because Clarke has the genuis of field positioning. How many times did he set fielders perfectly to catch top edges from Mitch or leg glances from their spinners ? Clarke sets unconventional fields because he, like a lot of 'grreat bowlers' have a knack of baiting batsmen with fielders. Great bowlers 'set you up' by putting a guy where he isnt supposed to be, then feeding you a ball that you end up smacking straight to that guy. Well, Clarke is the captain who has displayed this knack over and over again, better than any captain I've seen since Mark Taylor.
NareshK Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Its funny how one series is enough to decide how good or bad someone is. Clarke's team was whitewashed in India and lost 3-0 in England. What happened to his captaincy there ? A captain is only as good as his team and the results.

Clarke has evolved into a very good captain over the last couple of years. He is my style of captain: all balls. Reminds me of Ian Chappell and Mark Taylor that way. Over the years, Clarke has picked up some fine captaincy skills to complement his hyper-aggressive style. Skills such as immaculate field positioning and good rotation of bowlers. Still not a man-manager of Mark Taylor or Ranatunga/Ganguly's class but tacticaly he is as good as they come IMO.
King Tendulkar Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Poor Poor Skipper Wins one series at home and gora worshippers go in to over drive Did not seem that good when lost 4-0 in India and then lost in england. Annoyed senior players and forced some to quit. Only good with yes men in his team

I think Fleming was a fine captain too, though perhaps not as innovative as Clarke.
GoldenSun Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Good point. I think Fleming was a fine captain too' date=' though perhaps not as innovative as Clarke.[/quote'] Fleming's finest series was against us in 2001-02 year. He nearly beat us in Australia. Also Strauss was damn good as we'll.
Gunner Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Excellent tactical captain, knows how to get the best out of his fast bowlers.
Vijy Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Fleming's finest series was against us in 2001-02 year. He nearly beat us in Australia. Also Strauss was damn good as we'll. I'm sure Strauss was good, but I mostly followed his career when it was concluding, and by then his lack of form with the bat was beginning to affect him. But the early 2000s produced quite a few good captains, and so did the 90s. It remains to be seen how many good captains will emerge/currently playing now.
youngindia Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 a captain is only as good as his team.no team or individual can overachieve consistently.over a period of time, true level will show. however some are more inspirational than other, some others can extract work better than others, some are better man managers than others. its about how much you can extract from available resources. the key criterion is whether the team and support staff are stretched to their highest possible standard or near it through an inspired environment and a culture of high standards. he treads the line between calculated risks and gamble.but he is not hyper aggressive. he is guaranteed to be demanding. but his man management skills have a question mark considering last year's event with guys like warner going off on a rampage and long time friend Watson nearly getting alienated may not work the type of pace bowlers india has :haha:
CoverDrive Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Don't rate Clarke very high. he is a smart guy but he has big time issues managing other guys. all the earlier mess was due to him. captaincy has two aspects - being a good leader/backing you players /inspiring them and taking good tactical decisions. Clarke really poor on the first part. Someone like Dhoni is great at that while he is not such great decision maker on field due to his defensiveness. lehmann has to be credited a lot for for taking care of the first part and creating and great atmosphere in the team. also he is tactically very sound. people say that ponting (another poor captain) benefited a lot from lehmann when he was his deputy on SL tour.
