The BCCI is not allowing any of the six players -- Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane (Mumbai), Mohammed Shami (Bengal), Stuart Binny (Karnataka), Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Suresh Raina (UP) to play for their states as Indian ODI squad is flying off to New Zealand in wee hours of January 12 -- which is the last day of the quarterfinal. "Well, I think there was a good opportunity and a case to allow these players play for their teams in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal. There is a gap of seven days before they play the first ODI (January 19). I am sure these six could have joined the team a day or two later as it has happened earlier," Dravid told cricket website on Tuesday. Dravid feels that someone like Bhuvneshwar Kumar would have gained by getting ideal match-time in the quarters as he hasn't played competitive cricket for more than a month now. "If I would have been Bhuvneshwar, I would have liked to play. He may have bowled a lot in the nets but he hasn't played any matches for over a month. May be from Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane's perspective, they could have asked for a break after a gruelling series. But they are young kids, who would have wanted to take Mumbai to semifinal," Dravid said. Dravid also said that if likes of Rohit and Rahane play in Ranji Trophy, it "raises the profile" of the event. "I am not saying that BCCI doesn't value Ranji Trophy. They do value a lot but if these boys play, it raises profile of the event. Since the match (Mumbai vs Maharashtra) would be telecast live, people while flipping through channels, if they find Rohit batting, they would just hang around and watch a bit more," Dravid said. "Some of these guys (Shami for Bengal) are really valuable players for their teams and their coaches wouldn't have mind if they would have been available. Obviously, their opponents won't mind them not playing," Dravid said in jest.
vvvslaxman Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Yes. That is key. You need to promote your premiere first class tournament anyway which possible. Even though Rohit is tired of batting for long hours in SA, he could have used his "taulent" to help Mumbai.

"They have just come back from South Africa. Also, they leave shortly for what will be the start of a hectic year. So this is the time where they need to relax and recuperate."

He is the biggest of them all, and needs to be vociferous about improvements to Indian cricket. SRT, Kumble and Dravid and Ganguly need to champion things despite the stupid BCCI setup.

Batsman like Rahane for eg need to be playing as much as possible. E Bhuvi sat on the bench. So he is most certainly not tired. He is rusty. The players in question are Bhuvi, Rahane, Rohit , Shami. These guys are part both sides and have a decent chance of playing. I am going to forget Binny. Dont care if he plays or not. Raina as well considering he is part of the Indian ODI set up again probably playing test cricket ahead of an ODI series might not be the best for him.

Dont think its just about helping players to get their form back. It's also about showing the importance of our premier FC domestic tournament. That ways my respect for Zaheer has gone up. Could easily have opted out of the QF after giving it all in the 2 back to tests. Instead he will be bck on the field leading Mumbai. If he can do it surely younger players should be able to cope as well (not Shami as he cannot be over bowled week after week).
G_B_ Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I have it on good authority and Zaheer did not want to play but the MCA threatened to shut him out and farm him to Baroda or Maharashtra for the next season. Nayar was the one who wanted to play. Its not just Zaheer, i am sure Che and Mooli would have played for their respective sides as well. Lets be frank though, even in England a place where test cricket is most valued, players contracted centrally to the ECB are rested even if they are fit and well to play championship cricket. It happened with Root after the end of the Nz series. The big reason Durham are current champions is cause Yorkshire lost a lot of key players to various england formats. IMO players batsman especially should be allowed to play to keep them in touch. Rahane Rohit Bhuvi should have played. Not too sure about Shami. Young guy and bowled quite a few overs on the SA tour. It makes sense with Rahane and Rohit especially. Both live in mumbai and are playing at Wankhede. They can be with their families and also play cricket. Best of both worlds.

We judge him by the cover. He is a kind of guy who knows what do do for a job. be it is commentary or captain or player. If it requires toughness he will exercise it.

If it requires toughness he will exercise it. Come on. He was a failure as captain. you have to agree because he didn't keep Greg in check. Administration involves politics and power twisting. He is not capable. He failed as captain of managing people and he will fail horribly if he was administrator. You will probably never see a cricketer as admin unless he is too smart on dealing with politics and power twisting.
