I need some help from resident Tamilians on this. I have to learn reading of Tamil very quickly. Haven't set a time line of myself but it has to be as early as possible. Can you guys suggest some good online courses/tutorials or some books which may be good? I am not necessarily looking at free online courses. Ready to spend money if something worth that. I don't stay in Tamil speaking area so learning through interaction with other Tamil speaking people is not an option. I have already made an start and now can make out all Tamil alphabets and can read names and other nouns. Looking for some quick suggestions.

May I ask why do you need to learn tamil? Because it is very difficult to learn Tamil quickly. One might say almost nearly impossible. There are almost over 247-260 alphabets to learn. Plus different pronunciations and dialects. This would take time. Especially if you want to learn how to read only. It is better if you learn to read, writer, understand, speak.

I don't want to avoid speaking and writing but my focus is to be able to read what is written.

Minimum 1 month is required for just learning the alphabets. It's not like Hindi, which is relatively easy to learn. I suggest you join a Tamil course. 3 months is usually what it takes to learn basic Tamil.

It is hard to learn reading. But not impossible. Some people have better aptitude to pick up any language than others. Go for it. Any help needed. We can provide you. First start with basic 12 letters Then the 18 letters. then they combine and form the remaining letters 12 + 18 + (12 x 18) + 1 extra letter = 247 if you add Northie letters like "ha" "sha" etc.. you will have few more. Malayalam is pretty similar. except letter design is different.
