maniac Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014  our biggest victory, that in England 2007,came after he was sacked. What good did Chappell do except creating a insecure and infighting dressing room? He brought in promising talent from some remote parts of India and that too not quota picks or Ranji performers but raw talents from the not so traditional cricketing areas. Eg;Sree,R.P and Raina. If someone showed promise he wasn't scared of trying them.....eg;bringing in Uthappa. He tried some good things, didn't work out for him but he needs to be given a lot of credit too. Also his focus on fitness and fielding etc.
Austin 3:!6 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Ok I might have said it wrong about Ganguly called Sachin back at 194...but I still feel that was a great decision TBH. Agreed we won the test match in 4 days due to a collapse by parosis but if they got a solid partnership they could have drawn that match like they did in Kanpur test 1 year later. Ganguly was a fantastic skipper and few posters are underrating him due to personal dislikes which is very clear. Why you think all ex cricketers have to say all good thing about Ganguly as a skipper? He was good...so lets be honest and accept it. Having said that, I still feel Dhoni have surpassed Ganguly. If I have to Rate Indian skippers..it is Dhoni>Ganguly>Azhar. Kumble and Dravid might have been good skipper (or might not) but the sample size is too small to judge.

I don't remember

What good did Chappell do except creating a insecure and infighting dressing room? Chappel made the team to do military training before the WC 07. As a result entire team got jaded and knocked out of the tourney losing to BD :hysterical:
adi B Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Under Ganguly the same team that lost 0-8 would have lost 0-8 guarantee with that kind of batting performance. In SA it was rather a rookie side. But proper team selection should have helped us surprise SA. That is where he missed everything. In NZ he should have pushed for win. Sadly team selection again was poor. But our fielding also was abysmal. Also Dhoni is also defensive like Ganguly. I want someone who is tactically very very good . Someone who can buy wickets with a bit of strategy in unhelpful conditions. Dhoni's problem was he never made an attempt to build a bowling UNIT. India has never produced a fast bowler that can run through sides since Kapil dev. Even he was not in the mould of West Indian fast bowlers. We always depended on 2 or 3 fast bowlers clicking together. Kumble was a fantastic overseas spinner for us post 2000. India lacks dependable bowlers these days. But onus is on Dhoni to identify them. dhoni doesn't give a damn on accountability or onus,OTTOT the mule is playing his favourites pishant and a washed up zak :hysterical: .dhoni is pathetic in handling his bowling unit,he is past it.lets look forward to how kohli does!!
Austin 3:!6 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 John Wright - Ganguly and Dhoni - Kirsten was the best phase we had in Indian cricket. :agree:

If I recall that match correctly Sachin took like 1 hour to move from 190 - 194 :cantstop:

Pakistan faced 16 overs after India's declaration. At tea - Tendulkar was 165* of 312b At Declaration - Tendulkar 194* of 348b Make your own conclusions if Tendulkar was moving or not. Wright/Dravid felt he was not.
Lord Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 3 - 4 overs?? If I recall that match correctly Sachin took like 1 hour to move from 190 - 194 :cantstop: no he moved from 150 to 194 in 53 balls. Its all still there on Cricinfo :winky:
Crookbond Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 3 - 4 overs?? If I recall that match correctly Sachin took like 1 hour to move from 190 - 194 :cantstop: Wrong. Tendulkar was 187* (339b) and ended up with 194*(348b). Post 150, Tendulkar hit 4x4s.

I don't remember No he had the right ideas and he was influential in selections as per his contract, infact the Chappell debacle inspired Kirstn and Fletcher to be background players. I am not his supporter,he was a case of right ideas and wrong execution.

A captain can declare if feels he can get few wickets in the evening it did not work out but it was right decision , wicket there was far more important than Sachin reaching his 200. Yuvi got out on fifth ball and they declared right away. why so much fuss on one guy not being able to reach his milestone. Kumble waited too long to declare in banglore 2007 as he was waiting for fricking dinesh karthik to get his fifty.

Kumble waited too long to declare in banglore 2007 as he was waiting for fricking dinesh karthik to get his fifty. Ganguly declaration is aggressiveness but Dravid declaration is pu$$y. Dravid made those 91* of 114balls with a SR of ~80. But one can't blame Ganguly for the declaration. Dravid was hit on the ear by a Lee bouncer and required some treatment which may have taken up some valuable time. And here's what happened before Ganguly declared Dravid for 91* in the SCG Test match. Australia were 342/6 at End of Day 3 with Kaitch - 60* and Lee 0*. Lee was out for 0 on Day 4 leaving Australia on 350/7. Our aggressive, tiger, dada captain Ganguly spread the field out for Katich and let bowlers bowl to "tai lenders" like Gillespie who played 113 balls to make 42 runs and Katich went on to make 125 adding a partnership of 117 runs along with Gillespie. And for context, India had made 705 in the 1st innings to the match.
Midfielder Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Ganguly was the turning point of Indian cricket. He was decisive bold and brave. At least let us all respect him and thank him for all he has done.
horizonspeaks Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Well I still rate Ganguly ahead of Dhoni. A lot has been said about Ganguly is a better Test captain. I feel the same. Now consider how much does it depend on the captain to guide a team in T20 vs a test match. The latter has many more decision points than the former. So, it's much more difficult and complicated to lead in a Test match compared to a ODI or a T-20. So, the better Test captain is actually a better captain. The only thing I could think of as Dhoni's defense is that he has no fixed/good second-in-command, that Ganguly always had in Dravid. Ganguly didn't get a WC in India, so he doesn't have any "cup" to show. Dhoni can still learn things and get himself into a better position ... however I believe his time is running out. Kohli has all qualities of a good captain and I strongly believe he'd surpass Ganguly as a captain.
rkt.india Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 lol he wasnt a selector.you think he was making those calls solely and others just followed? Its like saying Fletcher brought Yadav and Aaron:cantstop: We were already a good fielding side due to Kaif and Yuvi. I don't remember Chappal was firm believer in trying new guys and build bench strength. If we had Chappal now, we wouldn't have seen Pandey not getting a match.
vvvslaxman Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 and Dhoni how to lose :P I dare hi. Say that :haha::cantstop:
