Sri Lanka cricket fan suffers heart attack after betting on India

A Sri Lankan fruit seller suffered a massive heart attack and died after he lost a USD300 bet that India would win the cricket T20 WC tournament, police said Monday. SP Kumara placed the 40,000-rupee bet on the eve of Sunday's final, wrongly predicting that Sri Lanka would repeat their "choking" performance at three previous international tournaments and lose to India. "He had gone to a bookmaker at Gampaha (town) and placed a fairly large bet on an Indian win and watched the match from there," a local police official told "When Sri Lanka won the match, he could not believe it." It was the second time the vendor had backed the wrong team. Police said he bet $1,100 on Sri Lanka to clinch the last T20 WC title in 2012, only to see his home country lose to the West Indies. Sri Lanka beat India by six wickets in Dhaka on Sunday. The vendor collapsed and was pronounced dead on admission to hospital in Gampaha just outside Colombo, said the police official who declined to be named. An inquest Monday was told that the man had no known medical condition, and police suspect the shock of losing the bet triggered the heart attack.

RIP Should have gone for his home country although the odds were in favor of Australia and India to win this. He would have got 7700$ had he place a punt on Srilanka Aussies and India were favorites to win and they were offered odds of 7/2. SriLankan win was offered odds of 7/1. Once common mistake is that people often place bets considering what bookies think. However, many times in history we see things go otherwise.

I think he bet on India just before the finals and not before the tournament. It says he thought Sri Lanka would choke again, so it's not like he knew India would face Sri Lanka in the final before the tournament even began. Anyway, it seemed like a fair enough bet. India were going great guns in the tournament and they've always had the better of Sri Lanka in most tournaments. That combined with the fact that Sri Lanka have always choked in World Cup finals after 1996 and that India themselves under Dhoni had never lost in a knockout game in ICC tournaments and it would've been very hard to go with Sri Lanka.
