Why, and what made you idolize/admire your favourite cricketer?

I have been a fan of Dravid since the Eden Test match. Since I was a kid back then, and knew not much about the game, that Test match was a revelation for me about the game. I vivdly recall watching the match with a bunch of people around me at a grocery store in Sikkim. Not many were cricket fans out there, but the ones who followed the game, followed it with a lot of enthusiasim. We did not have a televsion set, and most of our neigbours did not follow the game. I, myself used to head down to the shop very close to my house to follow cricket or rather more specifically to watch a television without actually bothering about what was going on in it. Remember watching few glimpses of the Mumbai Test match and how pissed most were after the game. Was during a vacation, and this time I followed the 2nd Eden Test match from 2nd or 3rd session, not exactly sure. After our debacle in the 1st innings, the people were annoyed and I recall them saying that team should be ashamed of not being able to put up a fight. The 2nd innings went underway, and yet again we ended up losing quick wickets. I knew few Indian batsmen back then, namely- Ganguly, Sachin and Mongia. After Sachin's wicket, most guys started to leave and the grocery guy went along with his job. I was absolutely clueless about what follow on actually meant or how screwed up we were. Watched the game with a much more minimized crowd than before, around 1 or 2 other guys. They seemed jobless and I watched it for the sake of watching television. The grocery store guy would ask us to leave as the game was over and this team is hopeless. Just so to stick around, I told him we would win this game, without really having an idea about; how exactly do we win a cricket match from hereon? Like literally. He offered me a days supply if we win and asked me to leave for the day. Showed up early the very next day, and the day after until we finally demolished the Aussies. I went back home with few supplies as promised and more since people there are very generous and 'careless'. Post match, people used to talk about the game(in Nepali), and I listened to them go about how the papers and fans weren't crediting enough and paying a lot of heed to Dravid's innings. I thereby came to a conclusion that Dravid played a better knock and was treated unfairly. Hence, turned into a massive admirer out of sympathy, before acknowledging his cricketing skill and how damn bloody good of a cricketer he was!

sehwag - baddest ass ever to play cricket his 309 @ multan.. its Saturday or Sunday i am not sure, he was hitting the pakis left , right and center .. phainta was relentless , non stop without any mercy :aha: :aha:.. sami and saqi were making a comeback , and they both cried when they were returning back :(( first time i felt sorry for any paki bowlers :((

Eden was the match for me too.Till then I only watched ODIs with my father that too till Sachin batted after which I slept and used to ask him about the result.I still remember him telling me about legendary Aggy innings v SL lol Eden Test I thought we won after we overtook the 270 odd lead in 2nd inning.Laxman made a immediate impression on me.

Rahul Dravid - Selfless man. Has done everything the country has demanded from him. He has NEVER said no to any responsibility and is probably the greatest cricketer of this generation. Younis Khan - A nice, hardworking chap in a team of losers. Figures only mask his contribution to Pakistani and world cricket.

Dhoni - From the modest background he belongs to reach to the level he did and yet so modest is freaking amazing. He was a ticket collector in Kharagpur station till 2003, used to live in 1 room railway quarter and even took a bank loan of 20 thousand rupees to buy a bike. Its easy to get into a national side from Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore etc. But from small places like Jharkhand its impossible to get into Indian team due to politics. Absolute legend and top respect for that guy.

What is wrong with idolizing? They are legends because they all have done something correct in their life and to follow their footsteps is no bad. I myself idolize many greats, not only from cricket but in various fields.

^ Can't be blindly devoted to anyone. Will lose the ability to criticize when the "idol" does something wrong. Admire the good shots or the way the player carries himself all you like, but a strict no to fanboyism. It only leads to embarrassment.
