Raina in the test 11 with Pujara out of it just doesn't seem right. Aussies backed Steven Smith for years even though he was neither an accomplished batsman nor a capable bowler. And the investment has paid off handsomely for them. We OTOH destroy our best batsmen and push incompetents in their place. Yes, while I believe Raina should get a few more chances at home, taking Pujara's spot is certainly not how it should be done. Had Pujara batted instead of him this match, he probably would have gotten a good confidence building fifty (although Lyon looked really dangerous and we all know how well Pujara does against Lyon).

At best he is a reserve player to be used only when all other batsmen in the squad are injured. There is no need to nurture him to a fruitful test career when there are other deserving batsmen who merit selection for the test team.

Our batting is not so piss-poor that the likes of Raina need an extended run. There are people like Manoj Tiwary, Jadhav, etc doing very well in domestic cricket and who deserve a longer run.

Dhoni tried his level best to make Raina a Test batsman by picking him all the time. I don't know why we persist with cr@p Test players like Raina when we have some good players waiting in the wings.

No he wasn't Yuvi was our no.6 most of our england tour Then we had Kohli at 6 from the middle of west indies tour .Played in Aus as well in 2011. Rahane was on the bench all the while Sachin went on his 100 hundreds quest . If anyone is to blame for Rahane's late entry it was Sachin delaying his retirement . Raina was nowhere near the XI.If anything he debuted ahead of Raina in the Delhi test when Dhawan got injured. Once Sachin retired he got his regular spot in the side

Next time when Raina was again in the squad Rahane was given the chance vs Australia . But fact is if Sachin had retired like Dravid after the Australia white wash Rahane would have got his chance in this NZL series itself. Or at least the entire Aus series and WI series too before going on this overseas trip Pujara was the one mostly chances denied by giving runs to Raina and Yuvi .
