You need at least one good swing bowler in your bowling unit. That's why Steyn was so great. He could bowl pace, he could bowl swing.

We did well with the same pace bowling unit in SA, England and Australia.

Ishant and Umesh are swing bowlers now, that too at sharp pace.

Problem we are facing now is Bumrah is returning from a long injury and Ishant is injured.

Umesh isn't a good swing bowler, overseas he is a failure and we didn't do well in England or SA. Only did well in Australia where you don't really need a swing bowler. Also you only need a swing bowler in England and NZ. We need to find a who can swing the ball when and can also bowl 145 when conditions get flat.

To become an all round attack for different conditions we should have enough in our armoury

Zaheer,RP ,Sreesanth did exceedingly well and were architects of our win in Eng 2007

Umesh is indisciplined at times and even Shami gets erratic (not often),we take time in these conditions and its a short series

He gets consistent outswing with the new ball.

Almost all our pacers had low averages and low SR in SA and England, barring Shami in England.

Prasidh is that pacer.  Gets consistent outswing.

Mavi too. Gets big inswing.

And both can bowl 145 kph.

I believe going with 3 quicks and one half decent spin bowler is a major stupidity. When 6 batsmen cant score, whats the point of playing 7th batsman? Selection is bizarre for me. Come tomorrow and when the 3 bowlers tire out, lets see whats going to happen.

Indian quicks did really well in tests in 2018 and 2019 ... because we bowled a high percentage of deliveries targeting the top of off stump or thereabouts.

In 2020 in tests in NZ ... our pacers are bowling very few balls targeting the top of off stump.

I don't know why. And this has been the biggest disappointment.

I think they look at Bumrah, they identify him as the leader of the pack and him being offcolour makes others look clueless, very bad, they are great as an individual, key to success in test cricket is disciplined approach be it batting or bowling,Bumrah can have off days, series, this is the time for others to step up and stagnated approach by TM and selectors also won't help,we need to develop a pool of fast bowlers for all conditions and give them ample chance where ever possible

What we need is someone who can get substantial lateral movement off a fuller length. Agarwal,Shaw,Kohli,Rahane,Shami all were victims of such deliveries. Umesh got a few such deliveries in here and there but was not consistently threatening. Also some of these fuller deliveries have gone for runs even when we were batting. With 240 on the board you just can't afford too many of these. With a decent total our bowlers could have been more attacking.

Our batting has been pathetic. We shouldn't be making tall claims about the legendary status of this team after such lacklustre performances. Pujara Vihari and Pant all got out to moronic shots.
