Our batting was very similar last time as well but what really hurt us was AB. Our lower middle order will have to bail us out.

Ability to turn the ball both ways ... thus introducing the element of deception ... has to be there if the surface is not offering huge turn.

 

Only Ashwin, after he has mastered his carrom ball in the last 2 years, has looked good in tests outside Asia.

 

90% of the finger spinners are like medium paced swing bowlers ... basically bowlers who do well only when conditions are very favourable.

If anything Ashwin has stopped bowling the carrom ball overseas, he gets more over spin now in overseas condition, Puts in a lot more body behind hence prone to back injuries, also gets it to dip a lot more then before.

Last time, Kohli was in prime form and Pujara was improving his batting outside Asia. And Rahane was dropped for a couple of tests.

 

This time all 3 are in terminal decline.

Saw quite a few carrom balls in the WTC Final and in the tests in Australia.

Saini was impressive in day 1 of 4 day game.  Was steaming in & bowling good Pace & showed a lot of aggression in his body language.  Didn't bowl many loose ball either.  Finally getting some rhythm into his bowling.

So Umran Malik benched again ... and this time for D.Chahar.   @Mosher, @Suhaan, @Vijy

 

This is why I was against D.Chahar getting into the A-team for Unofficial tests.

 

D.Chahar is occupying a frontline pacer's slot and not that of a bowling all-rounder cum 4th pacer as @Lord and @prudent_kreeda hoped.

 

And it is not a case of him not being given back to back games to keep him fresh, as @rkt.india thought.

 

This is how the Indian cricket fraternity usually treats a non-established genuine fast bowler.

 

Unless Umran has a niggle, this is totally foolish. 

 

P.S -- What is the need to play 2 spinners in SA ?

The way Saini is bowling in South Africa, he should be picked in our test squad for SA and can easily be the 3rd pacer behind Bumrah and Siraj.

 

I hope the pacers for the test squad to SA are

 

Bumrah

Siraj

Shami

Prasidh

Saini

Shardul

 

No point picking a semi-fit Ishant, who keeps breaking down and when he bowls he does so without effort these days.

 

OR

 

Umesh who has rarely been good outside Asia and has lost a lot of pace too, which was his strength.

Deepak Chahar has nothing to offer beyond club t20s why he's been seen as an option for SENA?

Maybe they want someone from swing bowler quota desperately

If someone is like Anderson or Southee that may make sense

Chahar is highly inconsistent even in the only craft he is skilled

Since the TM had no plans of actually playing Prasidh in this test series vs NZ, he should have been sent to SA to play the Unofficial Tests for India A.
