Umran Malik -

“I’m going to kill it in IPL 2025. I’m confident of taking a number of wickets this time. I’m not sure I’ll be touching 160 but I’m confident I’ll take a number of wickets bowling in the 150s”

Also he said - “I’m 200 percent fit”

This is what I wanted to hear. I hope he gets chances to play. I think he is the fastest bowler we’ve got. His body can actually handle bowling consistently fast easily.

Excited to see both him and Harshit together. Hope they create bouncy track

I often wonder how consistent these speed readings are.  @rkt.india was saying that he had seen a speed gun which can be set to give higher readings.

In the last 4 years or so, almost all pacers are clocking lower speed readings in international cricket matches than they did earlier. But they are not necessarily looking slower visually.

Only exception is Wood but he basically plays sparingly so that he can bowl very quickly.

In the 2003 to 2020 period, lots of standard pace bowlers used to clock high 140s or higher sometimes but never happens these days.

not sure of the reading on displayed on the screens, alway take them with pinch of salt.

But bowling speeds of all the top bowlers have decreased visibly so is their effectiveness. Example - Rabada 2/3 years back was top bowler. At one time he never went wkt less in IPL match now no one talks about him in same regards. Nortje has been bowling slower than usual, starc is on declining phase in terms of pace and effectiveness, IPL was kind of eye opener, not sure if batters would have thought of treating him this way in his prime.

Shami is getting slower, So is Bhumrah but sometimes he is able to clock ~148 kmph in test so not sure what is with him and since he added swing to his skills his pace has been up and down.

Cummins too has slowed down, at his prime he was fast and accurate but good thing with Aus bowlers all 3 is that they have reserve tanks and they increases their pace in certain high profile games.

Even Archer has slowed down after injury which is kind of understandable, may take some time to get to similar kind of speeds.

Naseem and Shaheen have slowed down considerably as is highly visible, both naseem and shaheen look ordinary in all 3 format. Shaheen a hardly touching 135 in test.

Naseem is also sub 140 kmph now most of the time unless its an effort ball.

The issue here is all top bowlers are aging or are on other side of 30s where its natural for pace to  go down or for engine to take time to warm-up.

Teams are either not able to bring new pacers into the team or who ever comes in gets injured.

In addition to it most bowlers wants to add t20bowling skills -slower, cutters, change of pace hence you are not getting 140-145+ kmph any more on the scene.

Here is the list of few proper 140+ kmph upcoming bowler in intnl scene but they are not getting much chances ---

Mayank, Umran, Rana, Sears, Morris, may be 1-2 in pak and SA as well, Nahid Rana, Pathirana.

They are either injured or do not play much or play test cricket.

Test bowling requires entirely different skill set for a fast bowler with t20 its getting lost. Fast bowlers for the 1st time facing the same thing which batters used to face being labeled as format specialist- test bowler, once a bowler gets that label its hard for them to get good franchises cricket contract.

Right now only Mark wood seems to be not losing the pace, he is kind of gaining pace each season

Most of the bowlers you mentioned are slowing due to age or injuries.

Starc is 34, Shami is 34...they are bound to get slow. Cummins though is younger but bowling overs after overs is showing its impact on him, Rabada slowed down for couple of years due to overbowling and injuries, but now he seems to have regained some of his pace back. Nortje, Milne and Ferguson too had suffered injuries.

Bumrah too has cut down his pace a bit, but it's understandable as he has added more skills in his armoury and is primarily focusing on Tests specifically, anyway he can up his pace when he wants to 144-146 range.

Pakistani bowlers are trundling coz they never had fitness for ODI or test cricket, they are 2 over bowlers...thats it. Weak and malnourished. Amir at an age of 32 was barely able to bowl super over in the T20 WC against USA...and Amir is a gentle 130-135kph medium pacer.

In recent times Nandre Burger is another bowler who is quick, Coetzee too can clock high speeds above 90+ mph. Lahiru Kumara clocks 145+ often.

World Cricket actually needs young bowlers, the senior quicks are hanging for too long. Anderson playing till 42, Southee is still going strong at an age of 36, Auzzie trio is in 31-34 range.

yes thats exactly was the point to the ques. on declining speed readings of all the bowlers.

Imo there are majorly 3 reasons for drop in pace in last 3/4 years::---

Age factor

Injuries

t20 skills.

previously in all the teams except ind. if there was a new bowler inducted say a #3/4 bowler was supposed to be the quicker thn the existing #1/2 bowler. but these days team often like bring in bowlers with t20 skills so the replacements are not like fresh faster bowlers but bowlers with t20 skills. And as a bowler no1 iwants to be tagged as test bowler and lose on those t20 leagues contracts.

Unfortunately he will only play if one of Vaibhav or Harshit not playing…

kkr bowling:

Nortje/Spencer J

Narine(Moeen Ali backup)

Varun C

Andre Russel

Harshit

Vaibhav Arora

then comes Umran..hopefully he somehow gets chance early and impresses so he becomes automatic pick in first xi

Umran should play above Vaibhav

Lahiru Kumara bowling in the 120s now.

Saw a fastest of 142 k in the first innings. May have bowled quicker in a later spell. Don't know.

His ability to sustain pace in tests is a bit under-par nowadays.

Ideally he should and I also want that too but Umran was not their first choice in auction from kkr plus Vaibhav was their PP bolwer along with starc even in knock outs..suggests they will prefer him over Umran..

Nagraj is a bit up and down in terms of pace like most U19 pacers.

Needs to be more rhythmic.

Looks about medium height.

Samarth is around 6 feet.
