BeautifulGame Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Understandable if a team has 4 bowlers who take 20 wkts and has quality spinner.Otherwise its better to play a decent all rounder instead of no.6 bat even if he cant make into the XI on either. Ultimately the aim should be about 20 wkts.More now where wkts are becoming more and more flat.

Even Ganguly took 5-fer in ODIs in Toronto against Pak but that does not make him a test alrounder.

Besides bowling allrounders need to be able to be an aggressive bat someone like a faulkner which he isn't. I still think pathan if fit is better then these pretenders & can play atleast 1-2 years becoz he's a much better bowler period unless rishi / bunny show remarkable improvement & start bowling 133-136 kph regularly.
Number Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Completely agree. Have argued for this on this forum multiple times in the past. Look no further than England. Their obsession of finding someone like Botham ruined them in 90s when they started trying too many bits and pieces players.

saneindian Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 When we have had the likes of Devang Gandhi, Sanjay Bangar, Vijay Bharadwaj etc playing for us in the last 12-14 years, why would a guy who saved a test for you (albeit on a fat deck) should not be given another opportunity. Yes its not ideal but our test history is replete with undeserving players getting into the 11. Ganguly when he was picked for his test debut was also in the same category IMO but silenced everyone with his performance. Captain needs to show more trust in the player he's picking as his 5th bowler though before we write him off.
