In tests. Not great but good.

neither in tests nor ODIs. Was dropped from ODIs after 15 matches, had a miserable test against WI, both home and away. After his first 6-8 tests, lot of people called him to be dropped. He was so pure that even Ashwin batted better than him. He then rejuvinated at Perth. His test batting still needs to get better. In ODIs, he is legend now.

When he got double 100s, he was in a groove, which was good, but he had to take off from that, which he never did. Don't forget the attacks he got them against. The English bowling was weak was an understatement. English could have lost the games to the top 5 Ranji teams in the country -- they were so damn weak. that will be unfair....yes ganguly got a shot a test match cricket due to his influence but credit needs to be given,grabbed it with both hands and never looked back. Kambli might have earned his shot the hard way initially but he screwed it up due to his own stupidity,vices and off field behavior . Ganguly had nothing to do with kamblis downfall.

So how many batsmen scored double 100 against those weak attacks? Talent doesnt mean you cannot have weakness. Weakness can be worked upon with hard work which he lacked.

I agree. he has played well in some tough series. That painful Sharjah tournament where Aquib took hattrick in final was his best. He carried the whole team that tournament.

If you go back and read again what I wrote, you may see that I said that was that SRT's family belonged to an intellectual elite. It seems to me that you have interpreted that as my stating that they belonged to an economic elite. If so, that is nowhere close to what I stated.

Crucially though Sachin's parents were well educated and he had his elder brother who shielded him. Kambli did not have that. In the end education does mattter.

You are, I think quite wrong in this. Read this guy, who grew up with SRT, and is a family friend of the Tendulkars: Link The writer of that Mint article is a close friend of mine and a former colleague. I have visited his home in the colony he mentions SRT growing up in several times. The flat is in Bandra, and while not luxury living, that colony is superb (for Mumbai). My information is that while SRT's family was not rich, they were significantly better off than Kambli's, whose father was a mechanic and who lived in a chawl.

Its also wrong to say that Kambli had no support. Both sachin and Kambli received stipend from Maffatlal (a textile industry leader in the city) from the age of 13. MCA also backed Kambli a lot making him captain of their team in the ranjis so that he could relauch himself. While he did form the backbone of Mumbai side in the late 90s early 00s. He did not have that sensational form to catapult him back into contention.

Kambli lived in Indiria Nagar, Kanjur Marg not Bhandup. I have been to Kambli's place and it is basically a slum and much more poor locality than Dadar. In the time when Kambli grew up, the highest economic job was to be a auto rickshaw driver.

Kambli was good but he couldn't digest the success he get and fall to a victim mentality that blaming for everybody for anything wrong with him. I distinctly remember that he blamed Sachin that he didnt support him to get into the team. he can be much better and may be considered top 10 Indian test batsman all time. This is how the work ethics, hardwork and eveytday learning can make you Sachin and lack of them make you Kambli..
