Era of bits and pieces

Aren't we getting the feeling that selectors are giving more priority to bits and pieces players more now as compared to 5 years back esp in ODI cricket. OR are they realized the importance of them now? As the famous adage goes "Horses for courses", ODi cricket demands few players who can do bit of everything.... Again, optimum number would be 2 and 3 would be far-fetched... Jadeja, ashwin and binny are in indian team.... Askar patel, Rishi dhawan and karn sharma in the A side It reminds me of Kapil's era .....Roger binny, kapil dev, manoj prabhakar, ravi shastri, kirmani....

Not really. I remember under ganguly we had 4 bowlers & 5th bowlers overs were completed by sehwag, yuvi, etc who were part timers. Dravid was made to keep wickets. Under dhoni we regulary play 5 bowlers who bowl most of the overs.

Then he should be selected in the team for his bowling. That is certainly better than his keeping, captaincy and batting. :agree:

Kapil and Kirmani weren't bits and pieces. They'd easily make the team as the all rounder and wicket keeper in an all time India XI.

Shastri started as a genuine left arm spinner but ended as a top order batsman. He was never a bts and pieces player as he was able to play both as a specialist batsman and specialist bowler albeit in various periods. Similarly Binny,, Madanlal batting was a bonus. Same with Prabakar albeit he was slightly a better batsman.
