sensible-indian Posted August 7, 2014 Author Posted August 7, 2014 IN conditions where ball moves extravagantly defending too much will eventually lead to downfall. Bud, I never said that. But trying to play Anderson's swinging deliveries with a non straight bat is running into dangerously risky territories. Also one UNRELATED technical batting question: How does Ashwin do so well inspite of not leaving balls? I have never seen him leave a ball. I know he covers the line and plays but still. Will it work in other innings where the ball swings.
Lord Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 He needs to work on ducking short balls yes.Not a convincing puller.

sensible-indian Posted August 7, 2014 Author Posted August 7, 2014 He needs to work on ducking short balls yes.Not a convincing puller. If ducking was so easy, Anderson and Broad would have done it long back. He just has to learn how to play them with a horizontal bat without getting tempted. Or learn how to roll his wrists when hooking (Sourav and now Raina style). He can master that.
sensible-indian Posted August 7, 2014 Author Posted August 7, 2014 he uses his wrists and plays it late.Pretty much like Laxman. He also didnt leave a lot of deliveries When playing outswingers, he calculates the swing and his bat is already in position waiting for the ball to thud into it.

They were discussing about in this com box. He plays as late as possible that is key to his timing.

sensible-indian Posted August 7, 2014 Author Posted August 7, 2014 I don't want to portray Ashwin as some crazy batting freak. But he exhibits certain qualities like never ever leaving a delivery even if it is swinging. And he plays it properly. Anderson's inswing delivery surprised him but it was more surprise that got him than inability.
vvvslaxman Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 Didnt VVs used do that. But he didn't do well in England. Vvs is a far more upright batsman. He had problems against balls that cut back sharply. Often left a yawning gap and played down the wrong line .Today Ashwin got several such inswingers from Anderson. He middled them from stumps. I was worried he was going to miss one of them. He connected every ball.

Like you mentioned, he pretty much played most of the deliveries against Anderson and Broad even though it was swinging a mile and scored off them too which was surprising because other batsmen struggled to put bat on ball. The reason why he was being a bit aggressive than normal today is because he realized if he played the defensive game, he might get a peach and get out. So he was trying to make the most of every scoring opportunity. He can be a bit more selective in shot making but today he went for runs and it worked for him.

By the way, did you notice those 1-2 balls that were straying down the leg and he had his legs right in front of the stumps and was trying to flick it. Those were straight balls. Even if one had seamed in, it was plumb LBW (as he wouldn't have had the time to adjust). Even one of the commies mentioned about that shot (not in a big way).
vvvslaxman Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 I think for the time being we should let him play the way he wants. If he bowls well that would be enough.
Laaloo Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 It was pathetic how the team mgmt and Dhoni used him in the two warmups. Not giving him almost any overs to bowl
sensible-indian Posted August 7, 2014 Author Posted August 7, 2014 It was pathetic how the team mgmt and Dhoni used him in the two warmups. Not giving him almost any overs to bowl Yup, I noticed that too. After everything was over, he would get a few overs to bowl.
R.D forever Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 He is definitely bowling better than what he did in SA. More effort and more revs. In SA he was just pushing the ball without using his body. Looks much better bowling to lefties. Right handers are picking him very easily since he doesnt have the doosra and the carrom ball has lost its mystery. Anyways it was nice to see him creating chances after seeing 3 tests full of jaddus darts.
vvvslaxman Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 It is a fresh start for him . Hope they don't this turn into an another one test affair. Considering he is a useful bat his presence would not hurt India all that much since he plays as a 5th bowler.
