err.. Mahendran is better. Maniratnam's Mouna Raagam was influnced by Nenjathai Killathe. Infact Mani himself admitted he cannot make a movie as good as Udhiri Pookkal.

Is it Balu Mahendran? if yes than agree Gun director? Who is Sridher?never heard of him... Does Shankar on the other hand have a case for himself to be one of the best from Tamil film industry? Obviously a topic i don't know a lot about

Balu Mahendra you might know from Sadma, Nireekshana (Aakasam enatido :musicman:). He was cinematographer who later became director. J Mahendran is the guy vvs mentioned. Easily among the greatest directors in Tamil. C V Sridhar is an old timer who gave some classics. Shankar is more mainstream (like Rajamouli) and has been the best commercial director in the last 2 decades. But Shankar is yet to give a single critically acclaimed film. So no he wouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Mahendran, KB, etc.

Sridhar gave us some great movies. He is also known for rejecting Hema malini subsequently she pursued her career in north. He is the one introduced Jayalalitha to Tamil movies.

Shankar is like a good ODI batsman. KB, Mahendran, Sridhar, Balu Mahendra are like Test Greats. Maniratnam is decent player in both Tests and ODIs, not too great, but quite good. But he (Mani) is out of form currently, whats the deal with Kadal! (in tamil) (Telugu was Kadali)

I have decent knowledge of tamil cinema. I keep a tab on movies made everywhere. But no clue who Mahendran is. Perhaps because he was well before my time. I think the best directors in tamil are Balachander, Manirathnam, Kamal Hasan, Balu Mahendra, Bharatiraja, Bala. Selvaraghavan, Gautam Menon, Rajeev Menon made some good films. Shankar is good but he is mostly a commercial director.
