fineleg Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 He remained "Not Out" and had drawn a Test. He prolly felt better now than risk a bad batting, or loss at SCG. This was a relative "good outcome" Test at MCG - a draw, and he batted some overs to ensure no further hiccups.

veer Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 I would say it was a good timing on Dhoni.. It was a well thought out plan I think. 1. Year was ending.. 2015 would bring a good change 2. Next test match is far off and since Kohli has already lead in first test, its better to give him captaincy now so that there is some type of continuity in the team. 3. WC is not far away so better focus on ODIs Good timing i would say..

Patel revealed Dhoni phoned him soon after the conclusion of the drawn Test in Melbourne to convey the news. "MS is a very practical man. Today, he called up just after the Test match in Melbourne and told me that he wanted to retire from Test cricket," Patel told PTI. "I asked him, 'What happened are you injured or what?' He just calmly told me, 'No, I just want to quit Test cricket for good.' He is an Indian captain and a distinguished cricketer. It's his personal choice and I needed to respect that. "I asked him, 'Is it your final decision,' and he told me, 'Please wait a bit as I want to inform the boys about my decision and then you can make an official announcement.' He duly called up and told me that I have informed the boys and you can go ahead. In the meanwhile, I also contacted chairman of selectors Sandeep (Patil) and Shivlal Yadav. He has done you all a big favor by retiring as you guys don't have to worry about him getting back to the side. If he plays its a problem, if he retires timing is an issue. What would have happened if he had gotten injured and did not play the 4th test? Kohli would have captained isn't it? Just think it like that and don't over complicate things. Entire India wanted his head, he has bowed out from tests. Now leave him in peace with his decision.

Another reason is that he has 15 overseas losses - a loss in the next test would have made him joint first on the list of captains with most overseas losses - I think there was a thread about that on ICF...
