Ban umpires call

Hearth got robbed today. Whoever made drs doesn't understand that even if the ball kisses the stumps, there's a high probability of the stumps being disturbed. Heraths ball was halfway in line with leg stump!!!!! This is plain robbery

But ball didn't kiss the stumps.
I'm just saying what sunny g said in commentary. He basically said that ball has to only kiss stumps to disturb the bails. Here, the ball was halfway in line with the stumps. It just highlights the stupidity of umpires call

If it had kissed the stumps then it would have certainly been bowled out ..

DRS is to remove howlers. 50-50 calls do not matter.
and this the reason the indian think tank hates it,they dont trust it and i dont blame them when the ICC doesnt trust it either.

As several commentators have said, the reviewing team should at least not lose the review if some portion of the ball goes on to hit the stumps.

Heraths ball was halfway in line with leg stump!!!!! This is plain robbery[/quote'] That is because people does not understand how DRS error rate works No, just because DRS SHOWS ball kissing the stumps, it does not mean it is. DRS themselves have admitted the +- 5 cm error rate Have you ever worked on oscillating particle and it's probability in school? Basically what this means is that the ball is not present at the exact spot where the TV shows you but it can be present anywhere in region between +5 cm and -5cm of that spot based on the error rate. Let's take a ball which is just kissing the stumps. Now because the ball can be present anywhere in +-5cm of the projection shown, when initial call is not out, it is assumed that the +5cm factor comes into play and the ball will miss the stumps completely. If the initial call is out, then for the same graphics, the -5 cm comes into play and it is assumed the ball will hit the stumps completely Think of the ball as not one point which is shown in the projection but as a particle oscillating anywhere between +5 and -5cm of that point.

But because of the +-5cm error rate, you cannot say that is the actual path

Hawk eye is not 100% accurate. That's why close decisions always go in favor of umpire. In Hawkeye replay, you may see the ball kissing the stump but that doesnt mean in reality, exactly that would happen. It may even miss the stumps. Its only about 80 % accurate. DRS is just there to remove the howler, not to take a call on marginal decisions.

Not faulting the technology' date=' just the principle behind umpires call.[/quote'] So with a +-5 error rate, what would you suggest. Only thing which can be done is what Sabby said, let the teams not lose the reviews.

drs is good tech, but the issue is with the number of reviews. Give it all to the 3rd ump and let him use the reviews unlimited..or find a better way but stop the limited reviews.

I haven't researched about this technology but if the error rate in the trajectory is +- 5 cm and if the system has been tested for so long, I reckon the average error rate could be around zero with an extreme of +-5 cms. We don't really know the distribution of the error. In other words, it could be that the likelihood of the ball remaining close the the projected path must be quite high. Hawkeye is also used in Tennis and is considered full proof in the absence of a better technology. There's no reason why we have to assume that the ball is somewhere around the extremes if the on-field umpire's decision has to be withheld

What they can do is avoid taking the input of on field umpire if the decision is reviewed for LBW. What is happening now is that if the on field umpire has given it out, then the decision stays even if the projected ball barely kisses the stumps. While if the on-field decision is not out, then they want more than 50% of the ball hitting the stumps What they can do is study the error distribution and take a call for a good enough confidence interval. If the technology is say 95% accurate if more than x% of the ball hits the stumps then they should give that out regardless of the on field decision if the projected path shows that x% of the ball is hitting the stumps. And I dont think x% is 50%. It must be quite less than that.
