Its quite natural for sportsmen to remember them in the times of big achievement for the country as they are the ones who dreamt of that nation first and fought for it. Unless you have guilt complex like some Pakistanis you should be okay with this statement.

Biggest ever for them. There were lot at stake an there was great anticipation about this match. Lot of build up. So some of this is justified.
